help arranging family room and choosing rug
My husband and I debated carpeting our family room - we both like it to be nice and cozy! But we can't bear to cover up the original hardwood, so we are likely going to get a bigger rug instead. The current rug we have is shag and I can't stand crumbs disappearing into it anyway ;) I am not sure how to choose a size and where to place it in relation to the furniture.
I also get confused as to how to place the TV. It would be most center above the fireplace, but my husband prefers it not to be there and I also agree it would be uncomfortable to look that high. Being in the corner feels "off," though. The mantel is in between my winter and spring decorations right now, so that's why it looks a little incomplete!
The sunroom is a new addition and we still need to install thresholds on the floor to connect the rooms. Oh, and the green armchair is a temporary piece (brought it in since I am pregnant and getting uncomfortable!) - usually there is a cream colored swivel chair there.

Comments (4)The arrangement in #4 looks comfortable & welcoming. I think the leather chair looks better near a wall to anchor it since it has such a large profile. I think you are right - the room needs to be pulled together with colors. You could consider reupholstering the chairs in a fabric that picks up the color of the leather chair & the gold curtains. Maybe add red ball fringe to the inside edges of the curtains? Again, you are right - the color of the sofa contributes nothing to the other colors. YOu could try a slipcover, again repeating the color of the leather chair or the curtains. Once you have your fabrics you can determine a paint color that picks ups one of your dominant colors - just softer. I think the table lamps look better at the ends of the sofa rather than popping up in the middle of the wall cutout. 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoTry the furnishings arrangement first and see if you think ti will work for the room. Then if you think it will work, consider a way to fish the cable over to the right location.
If you have an attic or a basement the cable can usually be easily run to the new location. Sometimes the cable can run below the area rug to the right location or secured to the baseboard. Be inventive!
There are other options if you are willing to purchase new seating. I just assumed you were trying to use your existing furniture.
