Would You Be Upset If . . . [Need Advice, Not Kitchen Related]
Comments (36)elizpiz - "John - what did you decide to do???" First I decided on one ending photo, then on another, then I changed my mind back and forth so rapidly that I became disoriented and drove over a pedestrian. A Flying Nun, I believe, and she sure was Blue. No, not really. What I'm doing is this. The book starts with my favorite picture on the cover. Then I found and paired pictures of she and me, which can be placed side-by-side, as if I am looking at her. The chronologically earliest pair was actually taken that way, and the subsequent pairs do fit together. This is the recurring theme in the book. What I saw each time I looked at her, as we traveled through life together. With courtship, wedding, travel, first child, second child, in between each look. The chronological story ends with the most recent pair of pictures, which are respectably recent. Then the book ends - is book-ended, as it were - with the favorite picture. But it doesn't really end. There are several blank pages following, for future pictures, because our story is far from over. I think, hope, that this design will work. I've received so much help from all of you. Thank you. And - this is more cut-paste cross-posting, I'm sorry, and if you frequent the Cooking Forum you may see the same words there - this struggle has made me realize something that I wanted to share. I got myself in this pickle because I haven't taken enough real pictures of her in recent years. Lots of digital snapshots, sure, but not real pictures, shot with real feeling on real film and printed on real paper by my own hands. I shot the kids, friends, still lifes, landscapes, abstracts. But I had already the shot of her that captured her spirit, that entranced me whenever I saw it, that I could be buried with, such that I thought I'd never need another. But I was wrong. And that is the real moral of this story. Never stop taking pictures of the people you love, because you never have enough. So now, I've laid out the book, and I am working on the captions. Which is more difficult yet. I'm listening to music to get the right frame of mind. "Little Wing" by Carlos Vamos, "Loverman" by Charlie Parker, and now "Gravity" by John Mayer. Each very different but all beautiful songs if you're looking for such....See MoreWould you buy and paint this cabinet if you needed a bookcase?
Comments (33)I do get the perspective, and having worked with Native Americans who hate having their culture caricatured, to belonging to a minority group myself that is often misrepresented, to me just not liking caricature in general, I can appreciate the sentiment. But the pictures on the doors might not even have people in them, or they could be covered with fabric if you like all the other decorative elements. I'm not a fan of Chinoiserie, but having said that, I have a house full of its cousin, "Japonaise" which is a little kitschy at times but the stuff I have, while a bit trite and cutesy is old and charming in some sense too. Only offensive if you were unsophisticated enough to think that Japanese people dressed like that now, etc. This is stylized art from a certain era which it evokes. My Japanese friend thought mom's things were charming antiques because that is not a style of art popular and ubiquitous in Japan anymore. There's corny stuff overdone for every culture, so you have to decide for yourself whether it is just cute or obnoxious. I have dorky ceramic figurines of a little Dutch boy and girl and they aren't very flattering to the Dutch as a whole, but they were in grandma's house when I was a kid and I indulge them still. But I sure wouldn't buy a lawn jockey and try and dress him up as St. Francis if what I really wanted in my front yard was a statue of St. Francis. Which would be my point about the cabinet. If you like the decorations and think it will look good at your house, buy it and work with it. If you want something plain, look for and buy something of quality that is plain. Comments (13)forget staining them. as mentioned above, it's actually more work than painting. you have to get them down to raw wood again before applying a new stain. (if you want it to look good) If you were thinking about doing a darker stain, you could do what they've done here to resemble a dark stain. General Finishes Dark Chocolate paint, and 2 coats of their clear coat. (you still have to sand and prime prior to painting) this is from a poster here on Houzz who shared this. right now, your backsplash, tile flooring and countertop are at odds. It's very busy with those 3, and all the other stuff you have going on in there. you have a lot of knick-knacks, plaids, stripes, tile pattern on the floor, granite movement, mosaic tile movement, etc. they really compete with one another. I'd remove the backsplash and that 4" granite piece up the back. Remove everything on top of the cabinets. Pare down half of what you have everywhere else. Paint your cabinets and get new hardware. I'd paint out the trim and baseboards to white, but that's me. on these first few pics, notice how these owners dealt w/the small space above the cabinets by have boxes built to fill in above it. If you're painting, this is easily done. Before/After. paint color is Shoji White with glaze, and Annonymous on the island the one above, and this one, show how removing old tile and the 4" granite piece up the back, make a big difference in look. you could always do a nicer crown molding on the tops of your cabs. look how nice it looks w/the white cabinets, darker wall color, and no stuff collecting dust on top! Maria Kilim before/after. she painted all the oak trim/baseboards, windows, etc. If you want to paint, hire a pro Cabinet Painter, not house painter. ask them how they prep the cabs and how they plan on painting. It's a ton of work to do and cost is going to reflect that. If someone gives you an estimate of 2-3k to do yours, don't fall for it.
