I had a small house also and for a long time we had a standard couch along a wall with a window and then a Lazy-Boy and larger chair along another wall. We replaced all of those with a huge sectional. Our sectional had a chaise that could be moved around (either end or in the middle to create a big snuggling area). My husband also built a very long sofa/console table to fit along one wall behind the sectional. Sectionals aren't for everyone, but we wanted more seating than we had AND we loved snuggling up in that corner to watch TV. I have an Ikea Ektorp ottoman - can be used to sit on (they are very sturdy) but also use a tray for people to set their glasses on.

Yes, I would put the couch facing the fireplace in the center of the room. If you have room, you can put a console table behind it. And then yes, I would keep the two chairs together if possible. Just as you have it pictured above is a classic design that you cannot go wrong with ... with two end tables and a coffee table. Then where people always go wrong is with .... layering and textures. They think color is going to be the answer to boring rooms, and it never is. You need to layer and you need to always be adding texture. Layer your accessories (example, pillows on top of throws), layer your area rugs (put a smaller one on top of a larger one). Use texture to create visual interest so that things are not "flat". That is how you decorate a room with interest. It is not with random wild colors. And then always have something from what I call "the live family". Something that is "living" although it can be faux, it doesn't have to actually be something alive, but something like a faux tree or an arrangement of some kind even if it's just an orchid arrangement on a coffee table or a large decorative vase with twigs/branches. Something from that family. But I decorate traditional, so again these are just my opinions.
