Curb Appeal Help for Newlyweds/New Parents

We recently purchased a small ranch in CT (and welcomed an addition to our family) so we are looking for a Spring DIY project on a budget.

After a harsh winter, we are looking to improve curb appeal. We recently pulled out trees/shrubs blocking the front and side of the home so we would like to keep any new shrubs/plants low to avoid hiding our home. The front and side of our home is shaded and a quick google search shows we are in zone 7a.

Any advice/education is greatly appreciated!!

A few additional points:

- Should we remove the stone in the front of the home and side of the home?

- Stone wall is approx 2.5 feet away from home.

- Stone wall is "L" shaped and extends out next to front steps.

- Looking for shrubs/plants that are easy to maintain.
