What paint line would you use for old plaster walls?

We are in the middle of a renovation of a 1920's home and painting every wall, trim and ceiling. Some walls are original plaster and some are new sheetrock. Our painter is pushing back on using SW Duration Matte, claiming that the labor cost will be almost double than originally planned, but I'm not convinced.

Any suggestions on the best interior paint line to use for a whole house (interior)? SW, BM or other?

That makes no sense.

I can recommend BM Aura Matte as a fabulous paint with 1 hour re-coat time so it makes for quick painting. I edge, roll, edge, roll and can do 2 coats in less than 4 hours (the prep takes longer than the painting with Aura).

It is expensive but great paint for many reasons: quick re-coat time as mentioned, self-priming, scrubbable, touch-up able, low VOC. I can touch up a spot on a wall 2 years later and it still matches. It is quite amazing. And I am always cleaning the walls with a large dog and kids and they really are scrubbable without any shiny spots.

Your painter probably likes to use what he is used to so you may be better off finding the paint line you want and then asking at the store for recommendations for a painter who is already familiar with the line.

editing to add that I am not a pro, just a person who likes to paint the house walls every 1-3 years.

I'd see if I could't find a piece of something, anything that is the color you are looking for and take it into the paint store. Most have a gadget that they can use to match paint to item. I'd then buy the smallest amount you can take it home and try it out either directly on the wall or on some posterboard to see if it's a match. If it is go back and get more BUT besure to look at it over a two or three day period in different light. Paint color changes depending on the light it's in.

Someone should have planned for the eventual mounting of cabinets before it reached the crisis point. A french cleat system may work. The metal cleat would give many possible points of attachment into the masonry, many chances to get good anchorage. If you weren't planning on a soffit before, installing such a structure to the ceiling would give a very strong mounting for the tops of the cabinets. The lower reaches of the cabinets could be stabilized with small-size wall anchors, because the weight would be carried by the soffit mounting (same goes for the cleat). 3/4" plywood sheets screwed and bonded with adhesive to the entire wall would render adequate fastening for the cabinets, but present challenges for the other finishes; these challenges can be met with more creativity. Epoxy-embedded bolts could work, if they were long enough, but the bolts are large and unsightly inside the cabinets. They would only work in the mortar joints; if you hit stone while drilling, you would then need to switch over to a masonry anchor screw (tapcons), which has a different appearance all together. For the bolts and the screws, they give one shot to get it right, and aren't reusable. The anchor epoxy is a very costly product. In my experience with 200 year old stone houses, the plaster and mortar are as unlike their modern counterparts as is possible, so typical (as-seen-on-TV) solutions are not of much use. Casey

That's not quite as bad as I was imagining. You can buy wall texture in spray cans Lowes/HomeDepot....ie knockdown, orange peel. It's not perfect but with some practice on cardboard or wood scraps in your garage you could probably acceptably DIY it following some sanding, spackle. I did have a drywall/plaster company come over for a plaster repair under a window that had to be replaced, don't know that I would assume that expense for your wall.

Looks like wallpaper to me :) I prefer repairs that resemble the original install method but you can also look into specific repair systems with plaster washers, or even use drywall and mud. You'll want to remove all the paper (steamer, or whatever method work ok), and anything loose. A lathe/plaster wall relies on the mechanical hold of "keys" through the lathe. Basically, the scratch coat is pushed through the lathe, and those blobs harden and hold it in place. So, you'll need to remove anything that is cracked and the surrounding area. You'll know you can stop removing once you see the keys through the lathe (ie ones that haven't broken off). The actual repair would be a pretty long post, but your basic options for further googling are: 1. scratch/brown/finish, known as a 3-coat plaster (probably what you have already). Products aren't usually carried at big-box stores, so call around to plaster suppliers or masonry/stucco suppliers. They'll be able to help you with product selection. 2. Drywall patch - a sort of 2-coat plaster system. Cut a drywall patch to fit the new hole (not too thick, might only need 1/4" drywall). Use durabond to mud it in. Finish coat with durabond. 3. Look into repairing with plaster washers (I'm not familiar myself).

Well, if he planned on one coat and Duration Matte takes two, that is almost double the labor.

Thanks everyone. Still trying to get a straight answer as to why it would cost so much more. After digging into it a little more, it seems that they don't want to do construction related touchups with a non-flat sheen. I call BS on that one. We are in a tight spot because we have a short tight timeline to get this work completed, but are feeling pushed into something that makes the builder's job easier.
