Need advice for poolside tree in Sacto, CA

We're considering building an underground pool in our backyard (just outside of Sacramento, CA - so crazy hot summers). We will have a 4'-5' width (no more/less) between the fence and what will be the retaining wall/pool. We currently have a Liquidambar. It's about 40 years old so we're hesitant to cut it down despite it's massive mess. However, I'm more worried about the roots and what it will do to a new retaining wall/pool. If we cut some of the roots, won't we kill some of the tree? Possibly the whole thing? Is it wise to simply cut it down? If so, I must consciously replace it with another tree. Which kind of tree or large/tall bush would be best? (I would prefer a tree) The purpose would be for shade and beautification.
