HELP PLEASE! Kitchen remodel and I am at a loss!
We are in the very beginning stages of planning a kitchen remodel. I need advice. I would like to get rid of the current bar we have and install an island length wise of our kitchen. However I am not sure we have enough room. There is 9' from the sink to the ugly after thought "used to be pantry" my husband installed. 8.5' from the fridge to the edge of the bar that is closest to the fridge.
I wanted cream colored cabinets but after much reading on here I'm more so leaning toward white again that goes to the ceiling (BTW my husband doesn't want white again so I'm not sure what else to do). We are talking with a custom cabinet builder this week.
I'm not sure what to do with the after thought pantry either my husband installed. It used to be a pantry with doors and he tore it out and put the misplaced cabinetry in that doesn't look right.
We just had our entire house repainted and I went with BM Revere Pewter for the majority of it. Trim was also done in a bright white. Therefore I'm thinking no to cream cabinets. I was thinking about BM White Dove but not even sure if that will clash with bright white trim.
The window over the sink is being replaced due to being broke with one large staitionary window with grids.
Right now the area with my kitchen table is so small due to the bar that I cannot even center my table underneath the light. Also, the french door is being replaced with a slider as there is not enough room to fully open the door due to the table.
Flooring will be oak hardwood that is currently in the rest of our downstairs.
Please help! I'm new here, I've never built a house let alone remodeled anything and I'm at a loss. I wanted to have a designer come take a look but my husband doesn't think we need one.

6 years agoI found this kitchen that is the same layout as ours. This is what I'm thinking in regard to an island. Except we would not install an oven where this one is located.

Comments (21)Ha, This is funny to me...All I have to say is...Darn baby gates! Allow me to explain - We have a 2.75yr old and a 6 month old. The plan was to get the kitchen done before the new baby came, but we planned, and planned, and planned, so long that he beat us to it. He was born in July and once I was over my postpartum recovery, we got back to kitchen. DH slowly started to demo the kitchen, doing some plumbing and electrical, leaving the major appliances intact as long as possible. Then the day came that we had to tear out the rest to get to the final bit of plumbing. Drywallers finished in November and we were all jazzed to get those cabinets in. WELL, one thing after another happened, winter colds with the kids, that previously booked vacation we had to take (glad we did!), then DH caught the flu or something, etc. All this with just a temporary kitchen (microwave, crock pot, frig, sink in the laundry room, and eating out A LOT). Just as DH was starting to feel better, I was on the demo'd side of the kitchen messing with paint chips and granite samples when I decided to step over the baby gate we had put up to keep my toddler out of there. My feet got all tangled up in the gate, my hands were full (luckily not with Baby), and Tiiiiiimmmber! I fell, slamming my shoulder into the wall, and broke my arm. Cut to 3 weeks later and here I am just starting to feel well enough to handle the kids on my own so DH can get back to working on the kitchen. Is there a point to my story?...Not really. Well, maybe it is to always walk AROUND the baby gate, NOT over! (painful lesson to learn). Actually my point is, with all that, we are surviving. Toddlers eat fairly simple foods and babies are even easier in the food department. The baby is sleeping through the night (knock on wood) so that does help. DH and I are tired of eating out, but we'll get through it (even if it is taking twice as long to lose some of that baby weight!). We debated waiting until the kids were older, but we just wanted to get the remodeling done so we could enjoy our kids and the home for years to come. My advice would be as everyone else said...Make all the decisions you can before you start demo. You don't want to be mid-remodel and still debating granite choices like me...and watch out for those baby gates!! Comments (10)FWIW I don't think a darker floor would conflict with your cherry floor-- as long as the tone is utterly different, it could look great. For the tile the key seems to be to get away from anything pink-ish or orange-ish. But all of the tiles you pick have that tone, so I would consider changing cabinet tone, maybe to something closer to your floor, and then the combo will be perfect. Even a lighter version of your floor would work. Maybe it's the cabinets that are throwing everything off instead of the floor! All of the tiles you like seem to be similar, so I would start with that and work from there. The tiles are lovely, just too pink/orange for the cabinets. Or, go darker with the tile, but we keep suggesting that and it isn't sounding good to you, so there must be a reason! I agree re: the dark grout-- it would look funny with that tile. With a slightly darker tile it could look awesome. Comments (5)I'd like to see the adjoining areas too. I'm thinking like remodelfla -- you would be better off moving the W/D and creating a galley kitchen that might have some extra storage on the long hall wall. If moving the water supply and drains is a problem (realize Florida might have concrete slabs like we do), then I would put the sink on that W/D walland the range would still be on the peninsula side, but look at a glass hood. I've seen plenty that look good over a peninsula. I know Candice Olsen has done one or more. I think the bigger issue is how that space works for you, and with 2 windows and 3 doorways in a small space, you have a better foyer than kitchen right now. It will function better if you can isolate the cooking tasks from the laundry (do you really want dryer lint where you are cooking anyway?). That looks like a galley with a hallway laundry pair either under the window or stacked to one side of the window. Assuming you need the three passage ways, I would consider keeping one large window and possibly closing up one or changing it to transom or backsplash windows. That gets involved in exterior factors and may or may not work for design, budget or other reasons, but I'd at least ask yourself those kind of questions now. Make sure you have thought about where the light comes from and how it shines into the kitchen -- now and with harsher angles in the winter. You may have views and light you cannot part with, but you could also have some harsh glare and heat. Good luck with your project and move....See MoreReady for kitchen remodel! Comments (47)Unless you are willing to remove the door in the dining room and extend the kitchen into the dining room, you are stuck with the layout you have. The problem is the budget. If you keep the same foot print, then you can probably get your kitchen remodeled for about 30K....including demo, cabinets, rebuild, etc. depending on your level of extras....soft close, inserts, drawers, hardware, new sink, faucet, plumbing, electrical, etc. If you start moving things you have more than doubled your cost. And then it is a "is it worth it in this neighborhood" kinda question....See More
