am i getting warmer? see kitchen pics please help- close to tear

This has been harder than i thought.... too many choices... We love our kitchen wood, and love the granite-meri gold (brownish /beige tones)... working on flooring. We also love our maple floor we picked.. but need to find a Tile.

What do you think of this tile? It has variations... do you like this tone? pic 1 (with this my fear is it looking too busy?)

This is the same tile as pic 2-- just look at the flat tile- not the wavy one (Same color) but ours would be flat

This is our cabinets (not the countertops) but just to show you a better pic- this is our exact color cabintes- and we are doing black nobs/handles - we cant do a floor as dark as in this pic b/c it would conflict with our rich wood in the above pic...

This is the floor (similiar to what will be next to the tile) its a rich maple- dont mind the wall colors b/c its golden yellow- ours will not be.... just see the maple floor- this will butt up to the tile....

I don't personally care for rough edges on porcelain/ceramic tile, but other than that I love the colors in #1 and would go for that if you could get it in a larger size than the picture (12x12 or 16x16). I think the different tones give it a more natural quality that goes well with your woods.

The other tiles are nice but just a little too neutral.

One day to remove, one day to remake the wall, one day to set, one day to grout...I think that's fair really. It is a time consuming job and you want him to do it carefully so the cabinets and counter aren't damaged in the process. You know, I'd like to suggest something entirely different which you might hate, but I'll do it anyhoo :) DH had your kitchen in his texas place, almost identical in tones so we had to giggle when we saw this post. I see you love earth tones by your pottery etc and you love slate and granite....honey you're wasting your time trying to make the space bright when the things you love are not bright. You just haven't embraced your dark side yet :) Come, step over to the dark side...earth tones and rich stones are devine when accented properly. You need to go with a rich tone on your walls like a brick or deep red, even a really deep green or gold (look to your crocks for inspiration). They'll make your cabinets sing and your stone will become a star. Hang a textured (dupioni or tapestry) drapery on the window top, soft and slouchy because you have so many hard edges) with a rich deep trim on it. CHANGE YOUR LIGHTING!!! You are entirely underlit and the white shades don't work with anything you've got going in your room. Go with beautiful rich amber shades and larger, more prevalent lighting as well as under and upper cabinet lighting (and to do that on the cheap, just put a bunch of christmas light strings on the top of the cabinet scattered about, you'll be amazed how much that helps your gloomy issue here). Embrace the darkside luke...umm I mean susan :) And your lovely kitchen will become a rich paradise you don't mind being in. You're half way there...step over the line :) And remember, a can of paint is WAY cheaper than a new backsplash isn't it? What's the worst thing that can happen???? You paint again. But in DH's kitchen, who everyone said was too dark when he tried to sell initially....I went with a deep umber tone on the walls and it sold three days later to a gal who described it as wonderfully cozy and rich :)

Really great inputs from all of you. Thank you for taking your time reading and responding! There are some great ideas here, but unfortunately, we will not be able to make all the changes due to various reasons. For example, we will not change the framing of the windows because that will require extra permit (I think); We will not re-do the walls and the ceiling in the wood room so we preserve its historical look (and to keep the budget down); etc. But @kaismom, you gave me some idea for re-doing the kitchen. (Love it in SketchUp since it doesn't cost anything to tear stuff down!) I moved the fridge to behind the division wall and made it tall cabinets all across. I realize that this will make the galley kitchen look even narrower, but it got the fridge out of the way, and since this is a single cook kitchen, being a little narrow is not too big a problem (I have about 39" of clearance between the counter top edge to the other cabinet wall.) I also moved the dishwasher to the left size because now I could put a 33" drawer base by its side. Now, I have two 2-basket trash pullout (for trash and recyclables). Not sure if that's an overkill. The only non-drawer cabinet is there because the code require access to the propane shutoff which is hidden behind that cabinet. (We will not use propane but the pipe is already there.) However, I still face the choices what to do with the opening at the kitchen: leave it completely open, have a one tier open counter, or have a small breakfast bar. I personally like the look of the one tier counter, but I have no good aesthetic sense; hence I appreciate your input. Currently, I'm putting this IKEA VÄRDE drawer unit for the two non-open options. Either way (one level or bar), I have a 40" opening from the short wall to the other side of the opening. I wonder if that's too narrow for the kitchen installation. But with the hallway at 39" wide, and the opening at 40", I can't foresee any problem with getting the appliances and cabinets in. Hope someone can point it out if it will be a problem. I did pick up a sample of Wyndham Cream, and also Hawthorne Yellow. The first coat of each is drying now. The cream color is so pretty but I'm afraid it will just look off-white. Have to give it another coat and look a few times.....I do think I am going in another direction compared to the colors I posted first...I think those will compete too much. Any others to consider? thanks again! J

PineBaron I'm with your DW on white or really dark, but I've had the white (although not my first choice at the moment) and gonna go for the really dark. Glad to hear I have a buddy in the process :) Sounds like you have a similar color scheme and other ideas I'm going for. I don't know why it makes me feel good to know that I'm not out in lala land with my ideas. lol omg i just clicked on the link! are you kidding me. that is gorgeous property, view, home! Loveit! the interior, the kitchen is what i envision on a smaller scale. I even have several sizes of that long bar hardware pictured in your kitchen drawing. Love the stacked cabinets . May I ask how tall those cabinets are stacked? such a cool look. Just wondering if there is a rule for stacking sizes? I like it when the bottom one is still somewhat tall then the top more of a square. Not sure if I have the ceiling height, but looks like you will! oh and if we go wtih something like tile 1- we would do a darker grout and that particular tile comes in 13x13-- or we would find something similiar in a larger tile 16x16??

I like #1 (though I also have to admit to prefering less-rough edges) or the textured tiles in picture #3.

Just in general -- Don't worry too much about your floor, because all of these are very neutral, and in practice, will fade into the background.

And BE SURE to bring all of your samples home before choosing. You will be amazed how much the colors change when you get them in your house...

I really like #1.

How big is your kitchen?

A few people will disagree, but I've heard it said here and on the Flooring Forum that if you want a room to look bigger use a bigger tile. So, if your kitchen is on the smaller side, you might want to consider a bigger tile....18x18 or 20x20. Even 16x16 would be better than 13x13. If you do want something bigger, then how about one of these...

Another vote for #1 or even a bit darker. A tone a couple of shades darker than your cabinets on the value scale would ground the space, and allow a little bit more of a contrast yet still keeps to your neutral palette.

If on the other hand you prefer to keep a more light palette then going lighter is fine too. :) Go for the look you like! I freely admit I'm in the 'darker' camp and crave higher contrast.

Others may not agree with me but FWIW the one thing I personally would not do is use a dark grout with a light tile; it tends to emphasize the look of the grid and chops up the space into squares. I experienced this in a bathroom that came with a house we owned. The eye was drawn to all those squares on the floor and claimed attention away from every other element in the room.

FWIW I don't think a darker floor would conflict with your cherry floor-- as long as the tone is utterly different, it could look great.

For the tile the key seems to be to get away from anything pink-ish or orange-ish. But all of the tiles you pick have that tone, so I would consider changing cabinet tone, maybe to something closer to your floor, and then the combo will be perfect. Even a lighter version of your floor would work. Maybe it's the cabinets that are throwing everything off instead of the floor! All of the tiles you like seem to be similar, so I would start with that and work from there. The tiles are lovely, just too pink/orange for the cabinets.

Or, go darker with the tile, but we keep suggesting that and it isn't sounding good to you, so there must be a reason! I agree re: the dark grout-- it would look funny with that tile. With a slightly darker tile it could look awesome.

I like #1 choice too. Nice colours and they go together well. Monochromatic colour scheme, which I love.

What are you planning for backsplash??
