Robot Vacuum: To iRobot Roomba OR Neato?
Comments (17)I have a Neato. His name is Rocky. This is my second Neato -- the first one gave up the ghost after about a year and a half which was disheartening. I have 2 dogs (one is a fur exploding shepherd mix) and 2 hairy cats. We run ours daily while we dog walk, and I'll say it replaces 80% of the need to vacuum. Maybe my cleaning standards are low, lol. Mine has no wifi and I don't use the scheduling feature; I just push the start button and let him go. The Good: The front corners and the little side brush are effective at getting into corners and running along the baseboards. The dirt hopper is large and it STILL gets filled each time I run it. I got the pet model with a rotating brush and it is very good at getting pet hair on both rugs and hard floors. It sits low to the ground and can get under pretty low clearances The Bad: He does get stuck a fair amount. We live in an old house and have black floor grates for our furnace...these tend to trip him up. He also gets tangled on long rug fringe, but not short fringe. He's temperamental and we have had to reboot him and calibrate the battery a couple of times. Overall, I wish he was less finicky but I can't imagine life without him. House cleaning is my least favorite chore and he makes a world of difference. I expect the robots will keep improving over time, and I fully expect to replace mine with another when this one goes. I'm hoping someone invents a dusting robot too....See MoreRobot vacuum at a cheap price

Comments (27)I have now vacuumed the floor with the oriental rugs using the Roomba i7. I agree with MH that the beaters are pretty soft so was willing to use them on the rugs. I taped the fringes to the backs with low residue blue masking tape - this is Scotch 2080 "for delicate surfaces". Then to make sure the tape wouldn't get sucked up, I taped the end on the front of the rugs with regular blue tape. But I think it would have been good enough just to end the low residue tape on the back of the rug. Despite my best efforts, as the Roomba patrolled it pulled an occasional strand of fringe out from under. I saw a few sticking out, and it's possible that others got pulled off entirely. But I saw no signs of damage and it never got stuck with fringe wrapped around a roller. I had sent it on training runs without vacuuming, and at one point the side brush snagged a strand of weft from a fringe and pulled it loose. I think the rug is fine without it, but I should have taped the fringes before even doing a non-vacuum pass. The i7 made a map of the floor, and I can make keep-out zones in order to clean the floor without doing the rugs. Tech support says I can make a second map of the same floor by doing a "training run", so one possibility is to have a map with the rugs excluded, and then clean the full floor occasionally using the map with the rugs included. Or I might just leave the fringes taped under, although it does look better with them out. I don't think it got a huge amount of dirt and fibers out of the rugs, but I figure anything it gets is better than nothing, as long as the rugs aren't harmed. And it did clean the floors well. BTW Costco just started selling the i7+ renumbered as the i8+, for $100 less and with more accessories....See MoreRobotic vacuum that also mops
Comments (0)I’d like to purchase one of these. Since my back surgery and hip surgeries, mopping the floor is difficult for me. We have all hardwood floors. Do any of you have any experience with these and could provide some advise?...See MoreJess Barrett
