I Pod books while you work
Comments (2)Sammy, I would love to listen to books or music as I garden, but we have a lot of rattlesnakes and copperheads here, and I'm afraid I would miss the warning rattle of a snake if I had any sort of earphones in my ears. (The warning rattle has kept me from stepping on a rattle snake at least 3 times since we moved here.) I do think it is a lovely idea for someone in a more urban setting who doesn't have to worry about venomous snakes. Dawn...See MoreLearning a new language--suggestions?
Comments (17)The public libraries in my area have shelf after shelf of language learning materials including audio materials and workbooks. You can pick and choose which "system" you like best or try several. I've lived abroad and I'm capable in several languages. I've been exposed to many different theories and approaches along the way. While immersion can be the most rapid approach, my experience would suggest that what will make the biggest difference is YOU. Just like learning to play a musical instrument, you need to spend the time and fight through the frustration until it starts to make sense. There's simply no substitute for time and perseverance. It's very do-able and the rewards are immeasurable. Good luck....See MoreDo you listen to audiobooks?
Comments (13)We have audio books that we usually listen to in the car -- it didn't occur to me that these could be downloaded, so I'll have to look into that. The Harry Potter audio books, the British versions with Stephen Frye reading, are what we usually listen to when driving, if there's no good music on the radio. This past week I have been listening to recordings of four bible study classes Jimmy Carter gave in 1998, called "Leading a Worthy Life." Not a book, exactly, but interesting....See MoreLight hearted short stories for cancer patient?
Comments (12)Thank you everyone for all your support. I am very happy to have spent the time asking the question. There are lots of titles listed that I completely overlooked and many that I will have to look into. My mom lives in the philippines and is old fashioned. She spent lots of time teaching and helping others as a social worker so maybe those 20th century country tales so I appreciate your suggestions Liz and Yoyobon. Thank you Ccrdmrbks. I am trying to relate to how my mom is feeling right now but I can't imagine it. We just celebrated my eldest sister's marriage last week so I think her emotions must be quite a mixture as well. Miss Read sounds promising. A friend highly reccomended Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe a long time back simply as a read to enjoy but I haven't gotten around to it. Anyone know if it would be appropriate for the situation? Comedy is an interesting idea. Though it may be hard to find something she relates to. I'll ask her and see if she has any favourites. Thank you all again so much, I've got all the titles written down and am going to do some research now! Take care and God bless! : )...See Moreladypat1
