Do you listen to audiobooks?

My friend just got an MP3 player so she can listen to books when she walks. She's looking for the best place to download books. Amazon looks a little pricey. She found another place that is $14 a month. Any suggestions for free or lower priced books to download?

Is it $14 a month for as many as she would like to download? And will she listen to a lot of them? If that is the case, that sounds like a fair deal. I spend that or more on each of my audiobooks from iTunes, for my iPhone. However, I don't download a lot of them, only when we drive to Montana and back.

It came with my new car, but it's not user friendly in my car, the way my radio is set up, so I rarely use it. It mainly gets used on road trips. It does come in handy though if we are in the car and there is a sports game on that is important to dh or my boys b/c we can almost always find it broadcast on one of the many sports channels. Jujubean, what a coincidence that you mentioned Serial. My neighbor just told me about it yesterday and I listened to the first installment this morning while weeding through email on my computer. I actually live just south of Baltimore, and was living here at the time of that murder but I don't remember it at all. The journalist does raise interesting questions in first installment about whether people can honestly account for their time on any particular day, especially one that occurred many weeks prior. I really should acquaint myself better with what is broadcast on Sirius as I spend a lot of time in my car and probably would enjoy many of the channels.

I love the ones you mentioned and almost all from NPR. I recently discovered The Moth which is people telling stories of something that happened in their life. There was a great one recently about a mom who discovered a very inappropriate email sent to her daughter by a guy the daughter knew. It was kind of funny -- the mom's horror, then how to tell her daughter she had snooped in her email, then confronting the kid who sent it. It was told in a half-joking manner until the end when it was quite poignant. I recommend The Moth. The only thing I don't like about Fresh Air is how they have to promote all their sponsors before they get to the conversation. Here is a link that might be useful: The Moth

Well, to answer the question, I listen to books through the Talking Books program that is run by the US Library of Congress National Library Service. I do all of my "reading" this way and have done so for the last 25 years. I'm very used to books on tape. Soon they will be converting to a digital format. Of course, being this kind of reader means that I don't often get to take part in discussions of books on boards like this one. I can't just order up a book from the library and expect to get it in time for the discussion. Sometimes I wait many years for a requested book. Just the other day I got one I'd requested 12 years ago, for instance. On the other hand, I get to keep the books for up to a year. I know of no other library with such a generous policy. Back in my student days, we often had to get library books for 24 hours only--and race back with them to avoid stiff fines.

I keep meaning to Terry Gross's interviews because I only catch them now and then. I used to listen to Thom Hartmann on the radio until they moved his show to late night, darn it. So occasionally I listen to his podcast. This American Life and Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me are both good.

I got an iPod for Christmas. I borrow audio CDs from our library, download to the computer, then to the iPod. I can get a lot of tasks done while listening to a book or a podcast. iTunes.com has free podcasts & I downloaded a couple, so far, from there.

Vicki, sorry I'm not sure what you get for the $14. I googled around and found that overdrive.com partners with libraries to provide audiobooks, so that may help her.

The library is free. I just can't get the little mp3 like player to jive with the computer to do it. Grrrrr. So I'm still getting cds from the library and listen to them in my car, or in the portable cd player (do you know how hard they are to find now!!) or a cassette player (they are getting really scarce now). I can work out in the garden or sit and cross stitch and listen to a book.

AudioOwl.com is a free one. I don't know how good it is or if there are any hidden fees, but I sent the website to my DSis for my Mother. Mom is almost blind now, but always loved to read. Usually they go to the library every week and borrow several audio books.

Our state library has free downloads from their website. All you need is a library card from your local library.

You just have to be careful about the due date, as the book will expire (and stop working in your mp3 player) when it's due unless you renew it, which you can do online.

I love audio books. I usually get my from the library I don't know how to download that sort of thing. You can also get free audio books at paperbackswap.com

I've listened to a couple Stephen King novels. I don't have an mp3 player, and wouldn't know what to do with one if I did. My grandkids who teach me all this stuff live in Florida now, so that limits my electronic abilities! lol

We have audio books that we usually listen to in the car -- it didn't occur to me that these could be downloaded, so I'll have to look into that.

The Harry Potter audio books, the British versions with Stephen Frye reading, are what we usually listen to when driving, if there's no good music on the radio.

This past week I have been listening to recordings of four bible study classes Jimmy Carter gave in 1998, called "Leading a Worthy Life." Not a book, exactly, but interesting.

Where I live our Library has free downloads - she should check that out. You can even put yourself on a waiting list if the audiobook you want is not available at the time you are looking.

I tried, but I find my mind wanders and I have to keep backing up to find where the day dreaming started. I guess I do better with hard copy.
