Comments (23)In the Dallas area, we (Rose Societies, Master Gardeners, Extension agents and horticulturalists from all over) have launched a major campaign to educate people about Rose Rosette. Our main goal at first is to get people (including landscapers and municipalities) to remove the plants that are infecting whole neighborhoods. Scientists are working hard on it, but there is no cure at this time. Removing an infecting cane is very risky. The chances are high that it will return. The disease is caused by a virus spread by the eriophyid mite. The mite can be killed by certain miticides, but only on contact. Unfortunately, they do not stay on the surface of the rose. On a more positive note, the virus is not in the soil. If you remove the roots, you can replant - some say in a week, some say a little longer. Of course, you can re-plant with a non-rose at any time. But, if there are many infected roses in your neighborhood, there is no point in replanting until they are removed. Talk to your neighbors who have infected plants. But, we hope you will not give up. Can you imagine gardens without roses? We can't....See MoreOh, my, oh, my...chaos has insued...
Comments (8)So is the problem you're having resolved related to the insane amount of rain we got last year? We have been dealing with water issues as well. In fact, the $6,000 waterproofing project really wasn't the way I wanted to spend my money, LOL. Our house is on a corner lot of a cul-de-sac and the terrain slopes down from the street all the way to the bottom of our street into the woods. Remember that day about a year ago when we got about 5 1/2 inches of rain in one day? That was the beginning of our water problems. For us, the ground underneath the slab portion of our house is so saturated that every time the rain is heavy enough and long enough, we had water breaching a wall in our basement/elevated crawl space on the other side of the slab. Sorry you are having to do all this work now. Your hostas will be OK in the pots and when you get to put them back and make that area beautiful again, it will be very rewarding....See MoreOh my gosh, oh my gosh...I am floating on air....
Comments (13)1Kgrace345, I kept going back and forth pondering over getting a Presto canner or the All American...I really could have gotten the Presto many years earlier, but I wanted to save my money and just wait. I have two mirro canners that I have had since I was married in 1970 that my grandmother gave to me that she used and they were literally falling apart. The handles were gone, and they no longer had handles to replace them, so I was having to lift the pot by the hot metal...last year I burned my hand really bad...but I kept on canning. I just bought those new gloves made out of well, what ever that is...my brain just backfired...I hate when that happens...darn it. My husband (behind my back) took them both to the dump...that made me really MAD because they were my grandmothers, and I would have like to have kept them for old times sake, anyways. But, he bought me this new one today..and I just about had a flying flip when he said we were going to town to get one...I got ready faster than lighting! I understand how you would still feel like you were a proud parent of your All American, lkgrace!! LOL If my husband wasn't looking at me on the way home I would have petted mine...LOL!!!...See MoreJersey tomatoes oh oh oh my!
Comments (12)I don't know if I have ever tasted a New Jersey tomato or their sweet corn, I am sure they are very good. However here in Indiana we grow tomatoes and sweet corn that are pretty tasty. There is a field planted with sweet corn a half mile from me and lots of tomato fields. The headquarters for Red Gold Tomatoes is not far from me either. I have my own tomatoes in my garden but did not plant sweet corn. Nasty raccoons don't know what is mine and what is theirs. Sue in Central Indiana...See MoreAquaEyes 7a NJ
