Front porch railing - need opinion
Comments (31)Virgil - It's not required by code. But our elevations have one drawn so the city won't bless off our house without one. So our options are: 1) Put in a permanent railing....wood, nice, traditional. City loves us and we move on. Will spend $$ on a nice railing. 2) Put in a temporary cheap railing. City loves us and when they leave, we take it down. Will spend some $ on a cheap railing which will ultimately be wasted when we take it down. 3) Resubmit the drawings without a railing. More $$ for basically pulling another permit. Plus dealing with the city again. But then we don't have to put up anything and can focus on another project. At this time, I don't know the cost differential between nice railing, cheap railing and the additional permit cost. So from a cost perspective, I can't factor that into my decision at the moment....See MoreFront porch railing
Comments (1)This is a custom iron project. You'll have to cal out a fabricator. At the same time, I would consider changing out the lanterns on the columns / piers. A lantern that mounts directly to the top of your piers would look better IMO that the cylinder/tube mount like you have currently....See MoreFront Porch Railing
Comments (11)Brenda, your comment to @Beverly made me think of my front porch which also faces West so I know what you mean about the heat! My suggestion is to install an external roll up solar shade. We got ours at Lowe’s for @ $100 a few years ago & it’s added so much value & flexibility to our use of front porch for such a small amount of $$ as house item purchases go. It is mounted behind the eve trim board & happened to be available in the same color so it is invisible when rolled up. Shade comes in multiple colors so one is sure to be good match to most houses. Our porch is ground level - poured with sidewalk so we don’t have a railing to attach it to. We drove spikes into ground & attached bungee cords to stakes - the hook at other end of cord attached to shade when rolled down - shade is @10’ long I think. You could roll part way down & attach to railing with hooks that come with shade or all the way & attached to deck. If breeze or wind not an issue then it can free hang. Again, this shade really expanded our use of our front porch! You can see through the shade a bit & it’s surprising how much cooler the porch is....See MoreHi. Comments (5)That used to be a stock moulding in my area but is no longer available- I ran up a similar looking moulding on a table saw pretty quickly, it also allowed me to choose first quality kiln dried pressure treated......See Morejmm1837
