Single Pane Sliding Window Broke, HELP!
Comments (5)How to fix a broken window I'm going to show you how to replace a broken window. This one was broken from the inside, so most of the shards went outward. You just want to make sure you have gloves on, and this is really sharp, and just pick up all the large pieces up out of the way. Determine what kind of window it is. On this one, the window insets inside the frame, so you're going to have to remove the whole entire frame to replace this window. We just slide the window over some to take out the frame, and lift it up and out real carefully so that you don't cut yourself or any of this glass falls. And then you can take it outside and you can proceed with replacing the window pane itself. And we have to take the frame apart. There's some screws set up in the corners of each side- just want to unscrew those. Be careful not to cut yourself. Sometimes, near the end, it gets hard to get the screw completely out. And then, you just want to slowly pull the frame apart like that. And you're going to do each corner exactly the same way until you have all of the glass falling out. And you'll have a rubber seal that you'll want to keep to slide the new glass into when you reassemble the frame. Comments (4)for certain, (A) it would be a new window installed in the bare framing you can get a better fit, stuff insulation in the gaps and have an easier job trimming the interior. (B) Replacement sash kits are utilizing the existing frame(must be in good condition. So if the frame is not a 100% plumb level and square no matter how good the new sash kits they will not seal properly. The sash kits will be utilizing a compression jamb liner which all the quality window companies stopped using on there better double hung new construction units years ago. Personally I like the idea of sash kits but the existing conditions must be perfect for me to not recommend removal of the old unit. The main advantage to sash kits is that you would not touch the exterior and or interior trim. hope this helps...See MoreSingle pane windows without storms?
Comments (16)3bean3, Just now our 100 year old house is without its nasty white proud-sitting triple track aluminum storms for the first time since we moved in 11 years ago. It is lovely to see the original 6x6 and 6x9 windows unobstructed, until they are repainted and new storms are installed, design yet to be determined. But suddenly we are very aware of street noises, while before our house was very quiet. Also, we have one less layer of security in our northeastern urban neighborhood. I'll be very glad when we have settled on a design for storm windows and they are installed. In our neighborhood, a number of house-proud neighbors have chosen those wooden storms with fixed upper panels and interchangeable storm/screens below. I am torn about losing the ability to open window sashes at the top to exhaust hot air near the ceiling. Have you thought about installing nice full-length screens on the outside, and magnetic interior storms? Some on the Home Forum say that this will make your original windows deteriorate faster, since they will remain exposed to the elements. Others say that condensation is actually a greater threat to your windows and that interior storms do a better job of protecting them from condensation. I'd be interested in hearing what Oberon, WoW, Trapper, brickeyee, xoldtimecarpenter and sombreuil have to say to that. Apparently many historic preservation districts require this solution. But somewhere in my research I remember someone -- Mr Yapp? -- pointing out that our old houses never were meant to be without storm windows -- people just rotated full-length storm and screen panels twice a year. And my friends who live in a meticulously restored 1740s farmhouse in Connecticut do just that -- they are the most historically correct homeowners that I know. This question makes a small bungalow seem mighty appealing about now: possibly the best solution! Your thread has attracted the great wizards of the Home Forum: their guidance is invaluable -- I just wanted to add a couple of less technical points that I think you might want to consider. Comments (1)The smallest air space is the least efficient. A 7/8" overall IGU has proven to be the best performer. Of course, any IGU will outperform a single pane, but if you're looking for maximum potential, try to use the 7/8" IGU. And, since you have wood windows, I recommend Super Spacer as the Warm Edge technology. To determine the weight, call a local IGU fabricator and they can give you a weight according to the size of glass. Michael Here is a link that might be useful: Super Spacer...See Moregeoffrey_b
