Hi andrea- It is often difficult to discern color in photos.

What color is your sectional, what color is your ottoman? (I do think an ottoman is a great idea in that space.)

When you say you want your rug to be neutral, what does neutral mean to you?

What "feel" do you want the room to have? Warm and cozy? Light and breezy?

You have no pattern in this room, and I would choose an Oriental-style rug in neutral colors. The ottoman looks comfortable but the overall look is heavy, and a metal and glass coffee table would look better there, especially if the rug has a beautiful pattern.

Or a little bit lighter rug

Your ottoman is not too big for your room, IMO. I agree that a great patterned rug is what you need in there and then pick pillows from the colors in the rug. Your room loks great.

I like celery girl's rug which has some warm colors which could be repeated in some of the pillows. The room immediately looks more interesting and warmer with this rug. Drapes in an oatmeal or cream color might also help, along with more art on the walls. It's a very nice room to begin with and with the rug and some small changes could be gorgeous. I don't think the ottoman is too large but it does have a heavy presence that a glass/metal coffee table would not, and it would make the room look larger and more airy.

I like your first and last photos best and I agree with others, once the room is decorated properly, the ottoman looks great in there and gives the space a cozy vibe!

Here is I tried OldGrayMare's idea. yes I gree, bring some warm colors with drapes, pillows and rug.I use Photoshop.
