Anyone like their long, narrow bathroom?
Comments (27)>>Generally people are drawn to rooms with windows on at least two sides and avoid rooms with windows on only one side. >> That made me laugh. I have a master bedroom 18x24', and a long narrow bathroom 6x13'. I argued with my contractor because I wanted to replace one wall with its window to have a full width closet instead. He sighed and said, "Look, it HAS to be there. It's the only place we can put a 5' window to meet fire codes." Darn - I could have had 45' of closet space instead of only 26'! I had reservations about a long narrow bathroom - similar to your Option #2, without the extra shower area - but we love it. Would it be nice to have 7x13 instead? Yes, but we have no trouble with both of us using the bathroom as it is, at the same time - and we are not small people. Although next time I design a bathroom, I will have separate sinks divided by a linen closet, instead of the linen closet at the end of the run. My DH's stuff keeps 'creeping' onto my side of the counter. Obviously 36" isn't enough for him - he wants the whole 6' to himself, LOL! I've posted this photo quite a few times before, but it's been a while so it might have fallen off by now. Here's what a 6' width looks like:...See MoreStorage cabinet in long, narrow bathroom
Comments (14)In the meantime, take a look at Pottery Barn's bath cabinets. They're in the bath section under floor storage. The apothecary floor storage is 19" w x 16"D x 60" H. Also look at the sundry tower and Newport sundry cabinet. There's also stacking modular units where you can configure drawers, door cabinets, and open shelves with baskets to meet your needs. The sundry cabinets and modulars are 36" H, giving you a surface to set out a make-up bag, blow dryer, etc. while in use. Some have a pull-out shelf too. If you were to have a cabinet made, I'd model after the Stuart Storage cabinet and hutch. That's 20" w x 15" D. The glass uppers keep it light and airy. I'd at least do a glass front and a base with drawers. I'd want it to look like all one piece, not stacked cabinets. I would keep the lines simple and vintage with inset drawers. On these PB pieces, the feet are the only ornamentation. As for size, a folded towel is only about 12" x 15". You need room for TP. Most of everything else you store in a bathroom will fit in a small drawer. You'll need to carry in your cleaning supplies. Can you tell I considered doing a pedestal sink in our MB? I would have had room for two cabinets though. I don't see room for a hand towel. If you had a cabinet made, you could have a towel ring placed on the cabinet. http://www.potterybarn.com/products/stuart-wood-floor-storage-cabinet-hutch/...See More24 X 24 inch tiles in long narrow bathroom
Comments (1)That would be disproportionate the the room size. Your room is small, and needs basic 12x12 tiles for the floor. No, a field cut edge of a tile will never match a factory edge, so cutting those down is not a good option. You can use the 12x24 on the walls of your tub shower, keeping everything else subordinate to the strong pattern that it has. Maybe a light gray for the bath floor that echoes the gray in the veining. You've picked the Superstar. The rest has to be Supporting Cast....See MoreObscure Glass Window in Bathroom?
Comments (22)That inset is really beautiful! Of course we have to have screens here in DC (not only required by code, but practically unless you want your house full of bugs if you open a window at all), but the flexibility of doing an inset, a film, a curtain, a blind, or nothing is what makes me lean toward just doing clear. The cost is so low as to be irrelevant, in perspective (less than half a percent of the project cost), but it just kind of squicks me out to be making a decision that will probably be in place for so long. In the condo I last lived in before buying this house (which I sell this Friday!), I had a window IN the shower and it just had privacy film on the lower portion (it was a double-hung...bane of my existence since the top would slip down and I'd have to put step stool IN the bathtub to put the top back in place!). It worked fine for over 5 years, through all the humidity and direct sunlight (unobstructed southern exposure, so it got direct sunlight ~7 months/year), and I didn't mind it....See MoreUser
