Congratulations on your new house! It looks like a nice, bright space and the cabinets look like they're in pretty good shape.

For now, yeah, new light formica countertops--check big box stores for grab-and-go laminates. They usually have a light color available, or try inexpensive butcher block.

I would not do heavy-duty spending on countertops yet. Paint, window treatments, possibly cabinet hardware, maaaybe do the floor, but otherwise live in it for six months or so till you get a feel for how well the space works for you.

You might decide you want to reconfigure the cabinets and it would be a shame to have to do expensive counters again.

I am sure you find the charm elements are lovely but before doing anything like changing floors or even counter tops I would live and work in the space for a bit.BTW if you putting new floors in and they are wood they should match the rest of the house.I can see things that I am sure will cause some trouble when preparing meals. The space seems nice and bright but the measurements you post seem to not match the space I am seeing so I am a bit confused .

Light bright and open for me would dictate removing the upper cabinets along the sink wall and the two glass cabinets on the peninsula. Every piece of countertop has an upper cabinet looming over it. Our house had this issue and we’re in the beginning stages of fixing it. We found it bothersome to always have a cabinet in our face whenever we were working in the kitchen.

We really like the idea of waiting before doing anything and seeing what we like about the kitchen, but the countertops & floors are a wedding present (we are getting married in June) and I have to admit I love the idea of doing renovations before moving all our stuff into the space!

Counter tops and floors are not that big of a deal to live through. Such a charming kitchen, I would really be careful about adding anything trendy (open shelving). Kind of a first do no harm situation. Removing the upper peninsula cabinets could create an issue with the soffit above. Think carefully so you're not opening a can of worms. You might be better off saving for a full renovation. Congrats on the home and marriage!

That makes total sense. My fiance is a stickler for not going too trendy, so he's keeping me grounded! Love open shelving but that's a good point. Also, we are not planning on being in the home for longer than 10 years, so I think it makes sense to stick with tried & true updates that add value and when we build our home I can go crazy!!

I've just said this on another thread: Grab and go countertops sound easy but they're not. You've got to cut them to size (can't be done well with a circular saw), install build-up on the tops and then install the top! Get them made to order and get a pro to install! Get all the same type and then save your pennies for quartz or granite, the mixed up look won't work in this kitchen (or any kitchen).

One of your issues with new counters will be you currently have a small (4"?) counter backplash + a tile backsplash which is generally frowned on so you are probably going to need/want to redo the backsplash too.

I'd try to match the wood to the rest of the house which should be doable.

I don't think I'd do two different counters in this kitchen.

I never thought about the backsplash issue. I don't like the backsplash as it is now but figured we'd just have to wait for that.

I feel super confused about the flooring! I thought it would be better to do a totally different wood instead of trying to match because I figured with 1925 wood it would be too obvious that they do not match. Something like this?

You need a flooring person but can usually come darn close with site finished wood.

If it were my kitchen I would replace the floors and keep the countertops for now. I agree with previous poster that the wall color does not go with the blue and white. Live with it for a while and decide what you love about the space. If you have enough storage I would remove the overhead cabinet with the glass doors.
