Just met with a roofing contractor last evening.... Now I installed my current asphalt shingle roof (one story with 6/12 pitch, about 15 squares) 25 years ago, and it's time for a new one. I won't be doing it again. The contractor showed a new-to-me product: metal shingles, as opposed to the standing-seam metal roof. It has the look of 'dimensional' asphalt shingles, but many times the life expectancy. It's guaranteed for 50 years with a probable life of 70. Not bad.... Plus, it has been tested to withstand 120 mph winds. It screws down rather than being nailed down. Plus, it's about as resistant to external fires as a roof can be. However, the cost.... The contractor quoted a price of about $12,000 - that's $800 a square! - whereas another roofer quoted a mere $3000 for an architectural-grade asphalt shingle roof. That's only $200 a square. I guess it all comes down to how long you plan to own the house. For me, my house is probably a tear-down if sold. (Small house, big lot in an expensive neighborhood) So despite the benefits and durability of the metal roofing, I probably go with the asphalt.... If you do choose to do that as well, check the materials/construction of the shingles closely. About 15 years ago, the asphalt content of shingles was reduced dramatically, shortening their life.... Ontariomom, I wonder with the set up that Ice has if that still might work for you because the panels are not solid up to the railing. I think the opening above the frosted glass makes it much less a barrier than frosted glass all the way up. I don't think it would appear to block the house like other, more solid choices would. And it would give you a bit of privacy on that deck, plus solve the cleaning issues. You could explore the code for how much space above the glass to the railing you could have.

After reading through the responses I do believe everyone has brought great comments and advice pertaining to metal roof systems. Through all of this though I noticed that the initial question was never fully answered other then opinions of ones metal roof fading or not fading. Unless your dealing with raw copper which is by far the best material one could use for a roofing application. At the end of the day the metal roof is as only as good as the paint finish that has been chemically bonded to the metal itself. It is important to understand that the resins within that paint is what gives the coatings the resistance to UV among a few other characteristics. Silicone Modified Polyester (SMP) and Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) are two chemical paint compositions used on metal roof panel applications. They are both very strong chemical bonds however PVDF is stronger. SMP's resin composition is built of carbon hydrogen, carbon oxygen and carbon silicone bonds. PVDF molecules are composed of alternating carbon flourine and carbon hydrogen bonds, carbon florine bonds would be considered one of the strongest chemical bonds. This chemical explanation shows why the Flourine bond of PVDF is superior to the Polyester bond of SMP and therefore will perform better in harsher conditions which in the long run reduces chalking and fading over SMP.

As far as cleaning is concerned, I'd recommend either 1) not roasting any meats in this oven, or 2) coming to terms with the fact that the oven will never look brand new again. Honestly, if this is your only oven, I'd do the latter. It doesn't really affect the functionality of the oven, if it permanently develops a bit of a patina over the years. I fully understand about the complication of storing different baking sheets. They are such an awkward shape. Even if you don't have small kitchen, that can pose a challenge. If you are doing a full remodel, it would be a good idea to explore, whether you can install toe kick drawers. My contractor thought that this was a really tacky idea. But when everything was said and done, even he admitted that it is the perfect place to store baking sheets. The Miele Speed Oven is a versatile and compact oven. If space is at a premium, I wouldn't hesitate recommending it. The fact that you now only have a single appliance for all your microwave, baking and roasting needs does mean you'll have to occasionally plan your cooking more carefully. And there'll inevitably be compromises. But that's always true when working around the limitations of a particularly compact kitchen.
