Airlines miles and my blood pressure (my rant-of-the-week)
Comments (12)Every US airline except SouthWest is on the brink of collapse - South West has been incredibly smart about its fuel buying policies, hedging against future increases etc. But the others don't have the liquidity to do that. So they're scrimping on everything: wonder where the blankets went? They save on laundry costs, plus every ounce of weight saved reduces their fuel consumption. They're designing lighter carts so that they can save fuel. And, as a person who was an avid FF mile collector and user, to ease the pain of the cost of going to the UK every year to see the family, I can tell you now - there are no more free tickets available, unless you book them about 12 months in advance. We used to use our miles to get upgrades on an economy ticket to business class: 1. no more available seats anyway, and 2. there's now a charge of $350 each way to get that upgrade, in addition to the miles: make that two round trip journeys, and we might as well buy a third economy seat and get more space that way, at that price (which we won't be doing: I have better uses for my money!) The airlines are in so much pain that staff morale is rock bottom. If someone from an airline is pleasant to you, they must be saintly. We can complain all we like - and it DOES stink that this is where we've ended up - but it's only going to get worse. Himself's nephew is a pilot, and has been laid off, and is struggling to make ends meet, with a baby on the way too. Sara, who still has to fly transatlantic, much as she'd rather stay home. (Oh, and we're cancelling our miles-earning credit card too, since it's now useless to us)....See MoreAnyone ever ordered from Vintage Tub and Bath?
Comments (51)Thank you all for your educational comments regarding this vendor. I was considering VTB for a solid surface shower base and will definitely NOT be ordering from them after reading the reviews. So many products arrive damaged these days that to think a seller would decline to provide replacements or offer to compensate someone who spent $$ with them is ridiculous. I was considering VTB as I had several vanities delivered by Lowes arrive with hairline cracks and damaged corners (oops dropped during shipping), and similar experiences with products from Wayfair, and Appliances Connection (stove looked like someone had run it over with a forklift), so I was broadening my search. You all have saved me some time and I appreciate it. I may just do custom since that, I can do myself, and get it right the first time. Oh well....See MoreHas anyone flown Spirit Airlines?
Comments (4)We flew Spirit a few years back to go to my nephew's wedding in Florida. (Atlantic City to Fort Myers). They were wonderful. Much cheaper than any of the airlines flying out of Philadelphia--the airport we normally use. And since they fly out of the much smaller AC airport, we didn't have to get there so early. Easy, quick check in. If I recall correctly, going down the plane left on time, but unfortunately landed about 2 hours late. Not Spirit's fault. Pres. Bush was landing right about the time we were scheduled to, and all traffic was made to circle until the airport was totally cleared. But we did get to see Airforce One at pretty close range as we taxied to the terminal. Coming home, we left just a little late--boy, I'm guessing here--maybe 15-20 minutes? But the pilot few so fast, we actually landed BEFORE our scheduled arrival. I've never been on such a quick flight to/from Florida. I was very pleased with them, but that was back when they were just starting out. Don't know how they are now. I do know my sister and BIL use Spirit frequently when they're going back and forth to Florida, so guess they're happy with them....See MoreDo I have any airline recourse?
Comments (38)true.. but this isn't your typical destination. A few years ago the number of visitors was wayyyy lower.. now it's a primo destination. A lot of the origination markets are new-- and still finding the schedule sweet spot to stay profitable and also manage crews, fleet and maintenance .. and minimize operational delays and cancellations-- again, it's not as simple as you'd think-- especially when so many origination cities have limited flights. I know it is frustrating-- but it's not like flying to London.. or even Cusco. Glad you were able to make it work with your reservations. Who knows, maybe that extra day will make your trip! Maybe you'll find a special restaurant or fit in an extra day trip or see a rare bird.. whatever! I know you like to turn negatives into positives.....See Moregsciencechick
