how has your kitchen's finish held up?
Comments (8)Diane, The MagnaMax finish is made by ML Campbell, one of the premier finish companies, so it should be very high quality and work well for you. It is a regular lacquer, which still enjoys the reputation among cabinetmakers of being more durable than its less environmentally-damaging waterborne counterparts. (California has enacted low-VOC regulations to protect shopworkers primarily who are exposed to these solvents all the time, so it's true you won't get traditional lacquer finishes there. Kitchenaddict's refinishers might have used a less-than-optimal waterborne type before they were really perfected. But she is correct that lacquers are still in use by cabinet shops/companies in many other states.) The quality of traditional vs. newer waterborne finishes is one of those subjective and controversial things that cabinetmakers love to fight over, so I refer you to any woodworking web site discussion forum for more details. :-) But I think you can rest well assured that your MagnaMax will be a durable, lovely finish that enhances your wood and lasts for a very long time. For what it's worth I have a pre-cat lacquer on my cabinets, and they are 15 years old and removed and recycled from another house into mine with nary a scratch or peel. Everyone asks where I bought my new cabinets....See MoreCustom Cabinet Peeps - How is finish holding up?
Comments (10)Ours are poplar painted in BM Aura and are fine, but definitely not perfect after 2.5 years. (Caveat: we also have a toddler and a giant dog, so...) We have some weird problems with discoloration on a couple of doors painted white that I need to call the cabinetmaker to get fixed, but just haven't had a moment to do. Half of our cabinets are gray and those are doing well, though. Otherwise, the finish is fine but chipped in a few places. Not enough to bother us or motivate us to get the touchup paint out yet, though. And honestly, I'm not sure it would be much different with factory finishes--our cabinets get rammed with toy wagons and push toys regularly, run into by humans and canines, etc.--so we're not exactly gentle on them. On balance we're quite happy with them, though if we were doing a painted kitchen today, I might experiment with some of the newer products (e.g., BM Advance, which had just hit the market when we were choosing paint). We have Aura throughout our house and I adore it for walls in flat/matte/eggshell, but am less thrilled with it in satin for trim and cabinetry....See MoreHow is your Greenfield Cabinetry painted finish holding up?

Comments (11)To get a shiny floor you have to PURCHASE shiny floor. Sorry but that's the way of it. You already admit you are over cleaning it just to make it look nicer. So you might as well go whole hog and add a temporary polish. Things like Rejuvenate or a polymere additive that is OK for vinyl/laminate is the way to go. The way you do this without wax build-up is: Strip the floor every time you want to add more shine. Yep. You guessed it. You will chemically/manually strip the polish off every 3-6 months and then add more once the floor is dry. This is the single possible way to add shine without adding layers of polish residue. Once you have lived with your 'polish', 'strip', 'polish', 'strip program for a year or two (should be 3-4 polish-strip-polish actions) you can then start saving for a floor that has a gloss level you can live with. Sorry but this is the only way to get a shiny floor - purchase a new floor that has a shine to it....See MoreFlo Mangan
