While I have not posted here in ages, I do keep up with your posts. I don't know how many readers were here when many of us read The Terror by Dan Simmons but it is a book that made a lasting impression on me, despite the horror aspects of the book that I thought were unnecessary. Tonight I read that there will be a new TV series starting on Monday, March 26, on AMC that is based on the book. The review I read in TV Guide is excellent so I will try for the first time to watch what the review says is like "a Masterpiece version of a classic horror movie: literate and philosophical, yet shocking and terrifically scary." I got the book off the shelf to look through before the series starts.

Probably won't watch it as horror scares me for real, not just for fun. However I did want to say that I was happy to see you posting!

Hi, Frances! It's been too long since you've posted. Good to see you again, and thanks for letting us know about the TV series.

I remember reading the book by Simmons and the discussion we had. Because of the discussion I wound up liking the book better than I thought I would. Like you I didn't think the supernatural/horror aspects were really necessary. But one poster was very knowledgeable about Inuit and Algonquin folklore and wrote how she thought the Wendigo part, for instance, and the other horror fit into the story very well. She helped change my mind.

I'm not particularly good about watching television and keeping up with a series, but I might give it a try. I think I do want to reread the book.

1. He needs to be walked with intermittent training (5 minutes Fun training/15 minutes walking/ 5 minutes training/ 15 minutes walking). 2. You need to teach him what is called "bite inhibition." He needs to be consistently corrected from mouthing in the way his mother and siblings would correct him: YELP loud when he mouths (even if it is not hurting). Stop playing with him or interacting with him at all (as trianglejohn describes) if he mouths. Ignore bad behavior and only interact/pet/play if he is appropriate. 3. Do not blame the dog for his lack of training. Did you research the breed before you bought him? Aussies are spirited, high energy dogs. This is a very labor intensive breed on the owner's part. I have friends with Aussies in agility and they need to run/work the dog intensively an hour a day, minimum. 4. Forget about your "dominating" the dog. Since you are home all day, it should be easy to sign up for a puppy kindergarten training class, which will teach you how to train him. 5. Reading and trying to apply what Cesar Milan does (without learning basic methods of dog training yourself) is like reading or watching someone drive a race car and then getting behind the wheel yourself. His methods in particular are not appropriate for puppies or for people who have no idea how to train a dog. Ian Dunbar is a world renowned dog trainer, behaviorist and vet. Couldn't do the trap because my job has me gone for long time daily but I did shoot him with the BB gun, but to my surprise the blues are roosting on the house but I guess they needed to nest quickly so I have an old dead tree in my back yard and I saw them flying around it and to my surprise there is a hole so I got my flashlight and they built a nest in it and there are 3 eggs already.....I quess they just couldn't wait. I'm hope the second time around they will use the house since the sparrow is gone. But thank you for all your advise your right only way to get rid of the house sparrow is to kill it.

I noticed the date of your post.... you're likely dealing with a hawk with a nest nearby, which is the only time they ever do these warnings. People get too close to the nest and, just like any of us humans would do for our babies, they go into protection and defense mode. They're not trying to hurt you, but to keep you from hurting their young. Once hatched the adults won't care anything about you. A red-tailed hawk will fledge about 42 days after hatching, but the adults will protect the nest during incubation as well. Just be patient.... they're not trying to hurt you. Find out what kind of hawk you're dealing with and steer clear of their nest and nest tree. And trust me, they gave warnings long before they started dive-bombing. NOTE: All hawks and owls are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (16 USC, 703-711)... bald eagles are protected also. Even vultures are protected by Federal law.

My answer for this is also no. Are you looking for reassurance that it's okay to take a trip or a reason (an excuse) why it's not? Millions (it's really tens of millions) of people fly every day and visit major tourist locations outside the US. Let's assume there will be two terrorist incidents in the next few months, which there won't be. You'll be safer in an airplane and visiting overseas locations than you would be driving in your car near your home and/or spending time in any US city, because US crime rates are very significantly higher than foreign ones (in industrialized countries). The US has had more deaths from terrorist incidents in the last 25 years than any developed country in the world. If you want to be safest, it's best to leave here.

I can't imagine that I will get through the first episode because I have never watched a horror movie or even read a horror book other than this one but I do want to see the ships and the ice, etc. This book made me a fan of polar exploration, which I remember that Frieda had much knowledge about, and I have read several books on the subject since then, with no horror other than mother nature's.

I can read it but for some reason cannot watch it. I am still trying to build up the courage to watch 'IT'.............

I can't watch horror movies as I get nightmares afterwards. I saw The Blob many years ago and was so affected that I have never watched any since!
