Comments (1)Mine have taken without damage down to 26 deg F this winter. However when they have growth flush and the arctic blast suddenly dipped down our nights to only 31 deg F with frosts, the new growth flush tips got fried, including those of kumquats and calamondins. I think they should be able to survive down to 21 deg F or lower without damage provided that the cooling period is slow enough to harden them up before the worst event. A sudden cold whiff from the arctic is always a problem, but most of our winters are gradual cooling. In effect, up here in the North, I would say that I only have minimal damages each year. I have grapefruits and pummelos which have mandarins grafted over on top and the grapefruits did not suffer a single leaf damage when it got to 26 deg F this winter....See MoreWould you choose a mandarin, pummelo or grapefruit?
Comments (2)I really really like Daisy tangerine with W Murcott a close second, and Murcott will do better in your area, (sunset 18 right?) than they do here. They get a little sun burn here in Indio. That said, you should consider the new pummelo cross called Cocktail (sold as a grapefruit, but there is no grapefruit in it's parentage.) It has a thin skin, unlike most pummelo, so it's much easier to eat and wow, what a wonderful flavor. I gave one to a friend recently and he said "you got to be kidding me. WOW that's fantastic" Also high on my list is Tahitian Pummelo also thin skin, light, slightly tart, refreshing, very juicy. Grapefruit are ok in your area but require more heat to be the very best. Tangerine and pummelo well be top notch. All will need frost protection of course, and tangerine is a little more frost tolerant than pummelo....See MoreWhich mandarin would you choose
Comments (9)They have Gold Nuggets Amanda! I live about 400 miles from Four Winds- maybe I live closer and shipping more reasonable? I drive right through Winters on my way to visit family in SF, and if they were open to the public I'd have to pre-cut up my credit cards. Thanks Parker. Really interesting about their cold tolerance- would have guessed it would be the other way around. Nancy...See MoreShasta Gold, Sumo, Mandarins, oh my!
Comments (29)Last week I found Shasta gold and sumos at Shoprite. Today I saw ruby tangos and golden nuggets in Walmart. The GNs didn’t look great, hard and pale. The ruby tangos looked beautiful, but they were expensive and I didn’t want to buy a whole box. I’m really impressed by how much variety there in mass market mandarains. So many more choices beyond cuties and halos. Still not as good as growing your own......See Moreuncle molewacker z9b Danville CA (E.SF Bay)
