Kids say and do the darndest things...
Comments (4)Well they don't have to be 5 years old to "say the darndest things". In late Spring, when I had lots of roses blooming, I was walking around the yard with my teenager daughters and at one point, one of them pointed at my beautiful Souvenir de la Malmaison blooms and announced "I don't like the POOFY ones!" To make it worse, her sister agreed! (it's a wonder I didn't fall down dead right there in the yard!) They both like the HT blooms and their favorite was the somewhat scrawny bloom of the scraggly Blue Skies that I have in a pot. I'm hoping it's just a phase they are going through :) I am happy that they like the HT flowers, I like them too - but to dismiss the POOFY ones - argh! Lynn...See MoreMy Pastas....
Comments (10)"Art Linkletter,Kids say the darndest things, one of my all time favorites!' carol 68 so I remember it well, the 3yr old has a drunk crazy mother and I was hoping to be a positive influence. Might guess she got in the way of me teaching the 3yr old. I remember Art well and have always wondered why no one has done an update of that show. And it would be easy to stage. My wife has a knee replacement and doesn't walk so well, 3yr old granddaughter asked "MawGaw why you walk that way". 5 yr old sister says; "Because she is OLD Reese, she's OLD". Recent study of kids and what is most important in their lives and it is grandparents. I "AM" Coach PawPaw Butchie! And Patsy is picking up grandson Noah at school as I write this. If there is anything you like about me it came from my PawPaw almost 70 yrs ago. For example if you have followed some of the things I'm doing, the bog and use of waste water comes directly from words that ring in my ears from my PawPaw. "Waste not want not" I water my plants in the bog with shower water then another bog with kitchen sink and washer water. I capture rain water and use it. If I throw anything in the garbage that can be recycled I know MY PawPaw is watching. So, I was trying to be the PawPaw for that 3yr old who is not my blood as well as my grandchildren like the PawPaw who let me ride the horse while he plowed. Comments (19)Dorothy, I never thought of it that way. Although, I have to admit that I enjoy watching DS deal with a two-year-old and it does seem like 'payback' (hee hee) for all the grief he gave us when he was little. So, I guess I'll get to enjoy watching him be on the adult side of the adult-teenager conflict one of these years. Paula, I remember that age well....."dumber than a box of rocks" pretty much sums up what most teenagers think about their parents when those kids reach that age. LOL Aren't you glad they outgrow it? You're raising some little gardeners too, and it reminds me of the old saying "If I'd known grandkids would be so much fun, I would have had them first." Isn't it just the most fun to share those home-grown pumpkins with the kids? I always get the greatest sense of pride from eating/using anything and everything we raised ourselves. And, you should be proud because your grandkids are learning early on just where their food comes from AND how they can be a part of the whole process. Mandy, If your mom says that your daughter's behavior is a little more "intense" than yours was, well, you know what that means.....it means it is your DH's fault because she got the entra fiesty genes from him! LOL I vote for having chickens. We have had them ever since we moved here and there's nothing better than farm fresh eggs. However, you absolutely must have a 100% predator-proof chicken coop and securely fenced chicken run or your kids' hearts will be broken when predators get your birds and your eggs. Every child that comes to our place is simply 100% fascinated with the chickens and their eggs. I know of at least one young boy who wouldn't eat eggs at all until he got to start gathering eggs at our house and taking them home with him. When I hear the name 'Felicity', two images come to mind. One is the TV show, 'Felicity', which was on in the late 1990s-early 2000s and starred Keri Russell in the title role. The other is the American Girls doll, Felicity. So, when I saw your daughter's name, those two pleasant images came to mind and now that you've described her, I can picture her in my mind and I see a darling and spirited young girl who loves to garden and who will, later on in her teens, give you every gray hair you have. I love traditional names too. Dorothy, Love the iron hand in the velvet glove reference. I think it is true, too. As long as those kids know there is an iron hand inside that velvet glove, the iron hand doesn't have to put in an appearance very often because just knowing it is there is quite a deterrence. You know, everyone, raising kids is a lot like raising a garden.....and don't we all know it! Dawn P.S. Mandy, I linked the American Girls website to show you their Felicity. One of our nieces had the 'Molly' doll when she was younger because Molly looked just like her and that was her favorite toy for years. Comments (26)For many years I tried to get Morning Glories to grow up a trellis that my husband put around our LP tank- never did have any luck with them so when my 4 year old (at the time) asked to help plant flowers I gave him a bunch of morning glory seeds to have for the garden- we had morning glories everywhere that year- When I asked him what he did to make them grow he says "nothing- i just stuck 'em in the dirt and left them alone". Now he plants morning glories in that bed every year and has named it his TURTLE GARDEN- he collects turtle figures all the time and even has our friends and family looking for new ones for him- his Granny got him 2 new ones for christmas this past year and he loved it. He is 7 now with over 50 turtles and still planting his "mornin glornies" as he calls them and I hope he keeps this up for many more years....See More- 8 years agolast modified: 8 years ago
