Pella & Jeld-Wen Windows @ Lowe's & Home Depot
Comments (11)I am a door and window dealer. Home Depot and Lowes will usually sell stock items for less than I am willing. If the item is special order I can easily beat their price, but more importantly I go to the jobsite and I confirm dimensions and code compliance for no additional cost. Windows and doors can be very complex and expensive and they cannot be returned. This is an area where unless you have had a bad expierence you cannot fully appreciate the value of that service. If the cost from a window specialist is even close to HD or Lowes it's a no brainer. After all if you can't trust them to mix paint correctly how can you expect them to understand Egress codes, Jamb widths, Sight lines, DP ratings, Solar Heat Gain, Structural mulls, flashing details or Temper codes. All of these details must come together in order to ensure a proper fit not just in the opening but in reference to the application. Vinyl windows are not as tricky but they still require more knowledge than their employees usually have. The simple rule of thumb for the big box stores, if you know exactly what you need and where to find it on the shelf, buy it and you probably saved some money. If not, find a professional that you trust....See Morejeld-wen windows
Comments (12)I have been in the window industry for 15 years, and installing Jeld-Wen windows for 10. (Personally I only install Jeld-Wen products, because it's my reputation and I don't want to be out money for repairs down the line.) So, let me just say that PROPER installation is EVERYTHING! It's really not for the average Joe. I even know alot of really good contractors, but their installation of windows is poor. This is a big investment and a big opening for wind a rain to get thru. I totally agree that ANY wood window that is installed improperly or not maintained well will deteriorate. And yes you can find stories of them just like the one on eBay about any window manufacturer. NO I'm not a sale rep. and I don't work for them or anything, I just happen to know alot about the product. Jeld-Wen is JUST the manufacturer, they do not install the product. It is important to do your homework and research ANY product and installer before purchase/hire. There are several different types of windows and options for ALL over the world. Just because a product is available to purchase or is sold in your area - DOESN'T mean that's what should be used! People will sell you what they think you want so they get the sale. I would say about 90% of the window failures I see are not from manufacturing. Is from improper installation OR use of the wrong product for the climate/area. If you must go to a Lowes/Home Depot type store - go during the day 9am to 4pm, weekdays. Anyone who nows the area they work in/and the manager are usally working during normal office hours. OR just ask for the Mill Manager....See MoreAuraLast and Jeld-Wen 'conspiracy'
Comments (56)I've been reading the fascinating debate above. Can someone in the business help or guide me? i work for a small Italian company that has been designing and building quality wooden windows for over 40 years. i think our prices are good and certainly competitive with what has been quoted above. The $1000000 question for us is whether there would be a market for us in the US. Looking for what the "Made in Italy" can offer, I could suggest our ecological leather lined windows, available in a wide range of colours. Our priority remains the quality of our product, including the question of heat and noise transmission. Any opinions are welcome, thanks...See MoreKolbe and Kolbe Impact Glass windows
Comments (5)Kritlyn-We got our Hurd bid back yesterday and if we use Hurd versus Kolbe and Kolbe we will save about 20%. We have a lot of windows and doors so this adds up. But then I started looking up more about Hurd and some people have apparently had problems with them. There was even a class action law suit about some gas trapped in the windows. However, all this information was years ago and it wasn't talking about the impact rated windows. (Plus, Hurd has since been bought out and is under new managment..good or bad I don't know) I have also read one site where people didn't like Kolbe and Kolbe. But I know that in the San Destin area a lot of people use both Kolbe and Kolbe and Hurd for their impact windows. We don't know what we are going to do yet. Apparently our contractor has never heard of Hurd. They didn't say we couldn't use them but they did emphasize how comfortable they are with Kolbe and Kolbe. Then again, we do stand to save a lot of money and the Hurd windows have been repeatedly tested and are Miami Dade rated. This is hard isn't it?! I am putting a link because I found it difficult to find any impact information on Hurd's site. Apparently, their impact product is fairly new but there have been a few hurricanes where the windows got tested in the real world. If you find out something let me know too. Thanks. I wonder if I should start a new posting with Hurd in the title to attract those with any information about Hurd Impact. Maybe I will do that so look there too and hopefully we will learn something. Thanks. Here is a link that might be useful: Hurd Feel Safe...See MoreE C
