26 yr old Sub Zero 501 R is fading - seekiing replacement options
Comments (8)I can't quote a one price fits all. If you're installing new kitchen cabinets then it's fairly easy to have your cabinet company make a matching panel for your unit. Our cabinets were installed 26 years ago and although the original company is still in business they no longer make my style panel nor do they use the same stain. I actually got an even better price on my BI 36R then what I originally quoted above so I didn't have any qualms about going the custom panel route. The cabinet company asked me to give them one of my existing door fronts so that they could custom mill an identical panel and also do a custom stain match. I paid $1600 for two wood panels - one for the refrigerator and a smaller one for the grill. That price also included some cabinetry work since I had to remove the small cabinet above my refrigerator since the BI 36 is taller than the 501F it replaced. It also included the Sub Zero Pro handle that I ordered. I really like this new unit. It is incredibly quiet, much quieter than the old one and maintains a set temperature perfectly....See MoreBeech v. Walnut Cabinets?
Comments (13)If you're talking about a contemporary style slab door, then quarter-cut material (like walnut) is mostly used for it's straighter more unified grain. A natural espresso would be quartered Wenge. Rifted oak stained dark is used as a less expensive alternative. I've only seen beech used in it's natural state but the grain is always straight. Some high-end European companies do used planked walnut but it's European walnut it has a different look then our domestic. What type are you looking at? Comments (13)My kitchen table is solid walnut, with a light stain and my kitchen cabinets are cherry, also with a light stain. The table is probably ten years old and has gotten lighter. The cabinetry is only a year old, but definitely darker than when it was installed. My kitchen faces north. I can't really speak to the "evenness" of walnut as it lightens, but I do think a light stain helps bring out the beauty of walnut. It's my favorite wood--I am sure your cabinets will be gorgeous no matter what you choose....See MoreAnyone have solid walnut slab cabinets?
Comments (39)Veneer is wonderful on doors. It's a smidge more fragile and harder to refinish, though. Veneer CAN chip on edges of heavily used doors if you're hard on things. For this reason I ended up going with solid walnut. We're rough on things. I have enough veneered furniture to know what we needed. BUT!! Veneer is BETTER on larger doors because it is put on plywood (or furniture board/MDF?) that is more stable and less likely to warp. And you can get very awesome effects with veneer. Most cabinet makers are happy to work with veneers and veneer is not indicative of a lower quality product at all. It can be quite the art! I do have one very large wide door that is slightly warped. I should have had that one veneered and my cabinetmaker should have caught that and told me so!...See More- 6 years ago
