Vinyl in sunken living room
Comments (9)Every sunken living room I have been in, needed massive amounts of floor prep to get the concrete substrate decent. They are usually like a bowl, with the concrete raised along the edges. Vinyl planks, need a very smooth and flat substrate or it will telegraph every imprefection, and be seen on the surface. Are you doing the flooring in the entryway???...See MoreWhat do you think of sunken living rooms?
Comments (36)Hello All. We bought a home in Ca. built in the mid 70's that has a sunken living room. We did not really think too much about it when we bought it. Yes, I think it is a 70's dated look but the views, school district and location were the selling points. I LOVE my house. It has been 12 years since we bought it and I have entertained a lot! No one has ever fallen. My Mom and Dad moved in with me in their 90's and can navigate the step down. That said my foyer is sautillo tile in a reddish brown color and there are 3 steps down to the cream carpeted living room directly opposite the large foyer. I too have large floor to ceiling windows opposite the entrance probably for dramatic effect, a huge floor to vaulted ceiling fireplace with large hearth on the left and a wrought iron railing to the right dividing the foyer level dining room from the living room. Rather odd in today's design world. The wrought iron railing extends down the stairs on the dinning room side. So with the railing, several steps and a cream carpet in the living room there may be enough visual cues for the transition. This room did have a sunken bar within it when we bought it. That was very odd as the bartender/bar was at waist height when standing in the room. LOL we floored it over to make the room all one level!...See MoreWood Framed Home with Sunken Living Room
Comments (10)I too hope someone can weigh in on this decision even though the thread is older. We were given a bid to level the sunken living room so we can have continuous wood, rather than the sunken living room with carpet sandwiched between wood floors. I worry also about the sound difference even with insulation. Has anyone experienced this? If I don't spend over $2,000 to choose this option, is it a terrible idea to have step downs into the living room with the surface being all wood- no visual transition? Thanks to all that can help....See MoreHelp with dining and sunken living room
Comments (10)IMO the red walls and the carpet both need to go. The FP is nice the loveseats too small for the space and honestly are never a good choice for seating. The lace curtains have to go and so do the 2 stands on either side of the art that is hung too high IMO need to also go . A nice buffet there would be a much better choice .Hand the art much lower and really it should be a larger piece on thta wall. Mantel decor is IMO best kept simple but since the pics you show are not relly saying much about your style it is hard to advise. BTW most people do not like to sit on a stool for dining and for sure a bar taable and lace curtains do not work together .The hutch is perfect as it is....See Morebdrmadre
