Comments (7)Went up to grocery store to buy a few items and to get steamed spiced shrimp for tonight's dinner. Next to the seafood counter was a lady giving samples of some fried shrimp product..she asked if I wanted to taste them..I took one and my eyes went to the trash bag beside her card table set and there was an empty 2 litter soda bottle in it. I asked her if that was trash and if I could have the empty bottle..she looked at me and of course said Yes so I felt I had to explain to her why. She said she'd never heard of such but she'd have to tell her Mom. So folks, keep your eyes open; you never know when you'll come across a free WS container....See MoreWho uses 2 Liter bottles?
Comments (18)Crates - I got mine from corner stores and from the Coca Cola truck. All I did was ask. Four years ago they were hard to get since they required a $5.00 deposit from the vendors but that was eliminated and now - at least here - you can get them for the asking. Since they do cost the pop companies a pretty penny, don't assume they will readily give them to you. I've had some folks say no. I now have an arsenal of them so am quite set for some time. Karen, I've posted about the upside down 'V' in the past but have gotten lazy in the last year. They do work better, but the simple slits still work. Wendy, If simply placing the bottles out like that is how you create those gorgeous gardens of yours, then I'll have to try it. :O)...See MoreConclusion - Milk Jugs are the Best
Comments (16)I must preface that this is my first year so I am not one to really make a call BUT... I am not one to not share so.... My favorite is the deep lasagne pan.... with the plastic lid... I could hardly get the lettuce out fast enough .. and I could see inside easily without opening. I put duct tape tabs on either side - top, to bottom, folding under enough to keep the flats protected. My second favorite is 2 LT bottles, easy to check on.... hard to water though... I think best for small seeds destined for HUNK OF SEEDLING planting. Milk jugs are #3... I just do not think they get enough light... the opaque coloring. I planted the same snap dragon seeds in a 2 LT and in a milk jug, the sprouts in the 2 LT HAD to be planted out today, the others, in the milk jug, are no where near ready.... I think I am going to like alyssum in tomato containers... they are still small but... I think the hunk of seedlings plan will be perfect with these containers! Also, I must add, I am starting my vegetable gardens and am going to try to cover my dill, marigolds, parsely, and basil seeds with pop, water, etc bottles... "mini greenhouses!" I removed the bottoms, put additional air / water holes in the top, 2 holes in the bottom of the open bottom to stick nails though to hold the containers in place in the ground until the seeds germinate. NBD but... I used my new electric scissors to prep the bottles and the best part was my new soldering iron! Too bad I blew it out today, I am hoping it was a cheap thing that couldn't stand up to my needs BUT for the holes it melted in my bottles for ventilation and hydration all I can say is WOOZEERS!!! ZIPPY QUICK! Isn't gardening such fun?!...See MoreMilk Jugs vs. Lasana Pan
Comments (9)I have planted most of my seeds in milk jugs and lasagna pans with lids. I noticed these things: lasagna pans - more surface area for sowing - less depth of soil - less ventilation (in my case, I had about 8 pencil size holes) - possible to overheat sprouts (remove lids earlier) - earlier to sprout and slower to grow (perhaps due to lids off) - holds moisture longer with lids on - easier to take lids off and top water gently milk jugs - less surface area for sowing - more soil depth - plenty of ventilation so they won't overheat as easily - sprouts grow larger and faster and have deeper root systems - easier to bottom water - easier to transport Which one do I prefer? I donno. It's a toss up. Each one has it's own advantages. They both work well for me. My guess as to why they grow larger in the milk jugs is due to having greater soil depth and perhaps extra warmth in the jugs....See Morejlhart76
