Distant Drum rose
Comments (33)Kate, Weeks sells Distant Drums budded in California every year, or they have for the past several years. I'm not sure you gain a thing by ordering this plant own root, especially by paying transcontinental shipping. And I'm a big fan of RU, that's not the issue. I've picked them up at a variety of good garden centers for three years running. The benefit of buying them either potted or bagged in person is that you get to see how the particular plant is budded. Distant Drums is viciously thorny and rather stiffly upright anyway, so it's not so you'd notice... but I like having a choice. Comments (19)Hi Veryzer, I'm outside Peoria, is that close by you? I've given DD a third chance; this time as grafted from Pickering. It's still small, it is blooming tho; so we'll see how it fares over the winter. I'm hopeful third time is the charm. I grow over 234 roses; only lost about 6 this past winter and 4 of those were Bucks...HoneySweet, Spanish Rhapsody, Wild Ginger, and Pipe Dreams. I have HTs, Bucks, OGRs, shrubs, floribundas, with lots of daylilies, iris, hostas, clematis, peonies, and other perennials. My most dependable and floriferous of the Bucks is Folksinger; but it is ravaged by JBs and is their favorite target. Polonaise is another Buck that is dependable, healthy, and the red blooms last and last on the bush. I'd welcome a visit to talk rose anytime; send me a private e-mail. I also belong to the Great Peoria Rose Society; we meet on the first Monday of every month and it's a great way to learn about roses, and to meet other rosey friends. Comments (12)Mine: 5 years old, own root. Grown in a very open location, full sun, blasted by late afternoon winds. Zone 8, but we have problems with hardiness of some varieties because of the exposure factor. The plant is 6 X 6 feet and gets NO pruning and only supplemental watering. It gets some Blackspot but otherwise is a trooper of the highest caliber. Other people do not have as good results as I have had, so YYMV....See MoreKoko Loko or Distant Drums?
Comments (27)Just to chime in on the downton abby topic. I'm 39 years old and loved the show! I loved Violet's character, she was very fitting for the era and her age at the time in the show. I'm not into the whole naming roses after celebrities and characters either. But if it's a good rose I will grow it no matter what the name. I'm not keen on Dick Clark, but I have the rose. I'm not a chef but you can't go wrong growing Julia Child. I do not have any of the downton roses, because I have not seen them locally and I'm not sure what hardiness zone they are rated for. But at least it's fitting to name roses after an english show that takes place in a time period of english gentry and gardens. Unlike many of the modern celebrity names on roses. Anyways, back to the topic of colour coordination. I love poseidon in my garden so far. Hoping to not encounter the tp look often. I've read Poseidon is not a lover of heat, zone 5-6 kind of rose. So if it's in all day sun spot in zone 7 and up, it probably will suffer ugly heat fried blooms. If you have afternoon shade, it will do well. Mine has no black spot. I love the look of distant drums and koko loco, but no experience with them. Violet's pride is getting a lot of rave reviews so far, despite the naming confusion! It looks very promising. 6 years agoJasmin, I am getting worried for tomorrow but excited. I ordered, Darcey Bussell but when I talk to Debbie it was not on my list. She put it back. She thought I did not want Poet's wife when I said yes so she put it back. Lichfield Angel is not there but she said she will look at inventory and yet she has not contacted me. I ordered a bunch but realized many were missing. I had that reserved also. So, we will see what I get. If they accidentally sold mine then I will get what I miss from KnM or unlimited roses. My neighbor is going with me. He is bring his SUV and I am driving my sedan 4 door. I will put a thread up plus my Peggy Martin which actually is flowering . I thought it will not flower but grow for a while... surprised.
