Exterior Design Advise

Hi I need some help with my exterior color choices. We are in the process of building our dream home. I feel sick to my stomach that I made a poor decision with picking out my shingle color. I chose landmark pewter gray to blend with our light gray metal roof in which we used on our dormers lower portions of roof and breezeway. I didn’t choose charcoal because it looked black to me and I didn’t know if I wanted a black roof. I was looking at driftwood and weatherwood but didn’t know if it would pair well up against the light gray metal. Anyhow on a cloudy/ rainy day when shaded or in the evenings as the sun goes down it puts of a purplish blue hugh which I think clashes with the siding. On a sunny day the roof blends well together. What should I have done differently. I’m sick to my stomach over this and losing sleep. I’ve posted once before on here but didn’t get a lot of response. Looking for your honest opinion.

Ultimately, I think you are going to like it. the colors look the nicest in the last 2 pictures. and they do look nice with the metal roof accents. You don't have your landscape or hardscape so you are focusing too much on the colors. I kinda feel like it's going to be one of those houses where you say "well I wouldn't have done that - but it looks good!" And you give props to the homeowner for having a vision.

I personally wouldn't have mixed that many materials and colors, but it looks fine overall.

Colors will also change as stuff gets weathered and dirty!

I think a smaller window in that giant space would look funny. I think that you could put in a normal size window or perhaps a three panel window or a door/ window or a stained glass window or something else that seems like a deliberate design choice. What's on the other side of that space?

I agree, there is way too much brown. I am thinking about the following: 1. Have flat areas (gables) pitched to same as rest of roof 2. Repair and paint soffit, fascia, stucco trim boards and gutters a soft white. 3. Replace Windows with white vinyl. 4. Paint Stucco a smoky taupe color. 5. Redo the front porch roof to be pitched the same as the second story. I am working on a design and will post it soon to get opinions. Like Save

Your tiles are a very neutral color and I would not paint them. A lot of work for no benefit. A black door would look fine with them. What do you mean by a Georgian door? Do the interior in any style you like. It does not need to "match" the outside in any way. Your photo is pretty fuzzy. A clearer picture of the front door area would let us give you more advice.

Stop beating yourself up! Throw in a red front door! You have been bold so far, no need to panic. It's looking like a post modern farm house. Great job!

The roof is fine. Sorry, but way too much is going on with the siding. It needs one color, and that dark gray ain’t it. Match the color of the tan and it will come together. It will even work with the brick then.

The siding is Boothbay blue but thanks for your opinion, something to consider.

When building a house (as with many things in life) it is best not to second guess yourself and just move forward. It will be lovely when it is done and you have your landscaping in place. Too many decisions yet to make to worry about one already made.

Well...since you asked. I think the roof colors are just fine. They are harmonious enough to be a good permanent match.

Frankly, I'm more concerned with the blue-gray siding and orange brick. That's not so harmonious, IMO. I'd second Sophie's recommendation, and unify the siding color with a tan color, even if that means painting the blue-gray siding. If it was my house, I'd probably paint the brick too.

I think it looks great. My guess is that whatever you pick, there will be days and time when the lighting makes this color look not quite a perfect match for that. That's life. My bedroom has about 7 different tones at any time and not all of them match the curtains. Getting a perfect match for all times of day and night and all sun levels was just impossible.

The more you look at something, the more imperfections you will see that no one else will notice. Just don't. Take a step back and admire your lovely house.

I like it. I like that it's not builder beige. I definitely wouldn't spend any money changing things until you see the whole thing completed with landscaping and hardscaping.

The roof looks fine! I really like it with the blue-gray siding----almost looks like some of the lighter colored roof shingles are the same tone as the siding. Really, trust everyone here, the roof looks good. Not worth more thought.

I might not have done the lighter color on so many areas, maybe just one large area for accent. BUT, to keep things in perspective, it looks good. If I was house hunting I would think it was a really attractive exterior, and if I bought the house I wouldn't even consider changing it. Says a lot.

I also am not a huge fan of the red brick, but that doesn't mean it's awful. I like that it adds a natural/earthy type lecture and color, and that it's a classic. I think some of the stone veneer/stacked stone can look a bit trendy and builder-cheap. There probably will be landscaping to soften and blend things. It's fine.

Don't lose perspective! The choices have been made, and it looks great. It's so easy to obsess over every little thing and focus on all the options we didn't choose that might have been very slightly better, but this will only make you crazy and serves no purpose. (Speaking from experience!)

Imagine if you drove up to this house and it was for sale. I bet you would love the overall presentation. I do. I honestly think it's nicely done and there is nothing that is even remotely is worth changing.

It looks great. Your house has character and personality. Don't bore it out with beige or light gray. Boothbay is a great color, and orangy reds look good with grayish blues. The brick is fine. Paint your front door brick red.
