v-groove ceiling stain, paint, white wash?

We are have a new build. The dining room has a big vaulted ceiling and we are going to install v-groove. I was originally going to paint it the trim color (Benjamin Moore white dove) but The spruce is so pretty I don’t want to waste it by painting it. We have messed around with white washing sample board but the natural wood color comes through too much and it looks fake... my husband thinks we need to stain it gray and then White wash over it. My parents think we should stain it! I don’t know what to do! What do y’all think? I have white dove perimeter cabinets and java stained island. The house is very traditional feeling with a touch of farm house. Some lantern light fixtures. The red oak floor will be stained special walnut. The light fixtures is getting an antique white milk paint ... my husband just tacked it up there with a strap so I could see how it fit in the room. What do I do to the Vgroove ceiling?

Drywall it first. It needs it for air sealing and fire resistance. Then decide how it feels to be white overhead vs wood.

I am having a similar dilemma, so I would love to see what you end up doing.

We have a designer here in Canada by the name of Sarah Richardson who likes to whitewash a lot. I recall one time reading that to avoid a pink look over wood that some whites leave, she actually uses a gray paint and then wipes it off. Maybe not wipe so much of the paint off on your sample?

It's a lovely room and with that view is bound to look gorgeous no matter what you do.

I have a log home, and yes bleach will bring back the original color of the beams. You mix 50/50 bleach and water, apply with a sprayer, leave on about 20 minutes then rinse. Once the beams are dry you can stain them and they will no longer turn the dark grey/black. Not sure if paint would cover it up, long term, especially if not bleached first. I would be afraid the color would blead through with time. My home was also dark grey, I bleached and they turned back to white, then stained over them, it work great and looks great. It was also new construction so I didnt have to worry about the mess.

If there are knots in the wood, you will have to use at least 2 coats of BINS and then putty over the knots and then prime them and paint them. A LOT of work.

Make sure you use Kilz or similar product to seal the knots. if you don’t, they will bleed right thru. a white wash or opaque finish would also be nice. I am contemplating white washing beams in our 100+ cottage to space.

I didn’t put up the wood ceiling, I’ve lived with it for 23 yrs. Going with a coastal look and want to paint it white as I want a light & airy space . I’ve felt the wood stained ceiling has always darkened the area. And yes I am having the work done & paying for it . The question I need help on is the sheen type to apply .

Thank you for your kind comments! I have decided to paint it the same color as the trim and hopefully at some point soon install some rustic beams. We probably won’t install the beams for a little while but as soon as the V groove is up I will post another picture!
