First time building my own pool. Need help with some basic questions.

Hi,

This is my first post here, so please excuse any anomalies in my post.

First of all this is a new home that im building, its a full concrete superstructure.

We are building a very small pool (size 6'x10' with 4' of depth) approximating 6000 ltrs capacity only.

Its more for having a calming view when sitting in front of it as opposed to actually swimming or diving in it. Its more for the visual appeal and occasional stand in the water experience.

Actual entering and using the pool will be once in 15 days or even a month maybe.

Our pool supply store close-by suggested a cartridge filter, then some others suggest going with a sand filter. Which would be ideal for our kind of intended usage & pool size and which is easier and cheaper to maintain ?

Depends on who is maintaining the pool. For that size pool and If I were doing the maintenance I would probably go with a cartridge filter. Cost is a little more but upkeep will be easier. You can calculate the filter size needed for your pool using this pool calculator .

I guess it depends on who you are talking to...Cartridge works well, cleaning is no fun. Usually twice a year. Sand is a good choice. Cleaning is turning a backwash valve, turning on pump and waiting for a few minutes. we can argue water clarity as an issue, but the difference between the two, with the eye is negligible. It also may depend on what you can do with the waste water. Sand filters are larger if space is an issue. A 60 sq ft body of water is very small. I usually call them a spa. If you are going to heat the pool and put in some therapy jets, then you must look at the entire circulation system and make decisions based on what you are doing with the "pool".

I recommend that you use a good consultant or experienced pool builder if this is you first pool.

Jeff: I didn't mean to criticize you for deleting the post, I meant to complain about how the Houz version of the site is different from the old Garden Web. In answer to your question about what happens next, it takes about 6-8 weeks from the time a flower forms until it becomes a ripe fruit under ideal garden conditions. It's not unusual for the first flowers that form to fall off without forming fruits. Early girls can ripen a little sooner than beefsteak type tomatoes. Also, I would encourage you to stop worrying about a few bugs. Ants and grasshoppers won't hurt your plants, but too much hot sauce or dish liquid might hurt them. As someone said earlier, you're more likely to have problems with diseases than insects, and home made insecticides can make your plants more likely to get diseases by damaging the leaves.

Steel walls would be my choice polymer walls tend to warp and don't give you those straight lines on the pool. I change about 40 liners in pools per season and the steel walls very seldom show any type of corrosion and some of these pools are 20yrs plus old. Go with the salt system the UV will cause staining down the road...If I had to pick between sand or a cartridge filter I would go with sand...Do some research on DE fiters to me they are the best of both worlds and that is what I have on my personnel pool and as a builder I could have any filter I want... also if it were me I would look at Pentair equipment. For the heater if you not planning on swimming in Dec look at a heat pump rather than gas....250,000 BTU should be fine other than that... Rusty

We started getting bids from PBs, but have since decided on the OB route. This is due to crazy money we expect to save (and most likely transfer to upgrades and more features as Joe said). We OB our house several years ago and saved a good deal of money there - this should be a baby project in comparison. Just to be clear - we didn't actually do any of the work ourselves - subcontracted it. We will do the same for the pool. There are a few things to consider when doing OB. One, you need to be organized and detail oriented and make sure you are very clear about what you want. The fastest path to disappointment is unspoken expectations. Also, it helps to research a little and come into the bid process informed. The more informed you are, the more negotiating you can do. Kind of like buying a car and knowing the dealer invoice price. Another thing - expect that there will be bumps in the process. Not everything turns out exactly how you would like. For little problems you need to be able to process it, adjust expectations, and move on. Also, if you are considering the OB process it helps to hook up with a consultant. I think that Houseful and Swimming07?? are in Arizona and used a consultant. This is kind of like an insurance policy to have someone knowlegable in the industry on your side. If all this talk scares you - you may want to consider using a pool builder. $40k sounds pretty reasonable. I am assuming no spa? BTW - here is a picture of our finished house. Our lowest bid was $95 a sq ft - we built it for $68 per sq ft. This is with wood floors/granite/etc. Good luck.

Here are some quick responses to your specific questions. I always like to point out that we do have an FAQ that answers most questions, but can be overwhelming!! Re: dormancy - they don't have to be cold, but dry and cooler, so bring it in in Sept when it starts to cool down, and stop watering it. Let the leaves yellow and dry out, then cut them down (or grow as evergreen per Donna...but you asked about dormancy, so I'm telling you what my pal in NH does). You can cut the neck straight across where the leaves came out just to keep in clean. Dust it with cinnamon (a good antifungal) and set the pot in the coolest part of your apt out of sunlight. Wait 6-8 weeks and bring the pot out. Give it a good watering and set it in a sunny window and it should bloom again for you. Keep in mind this summer you should be giving it a good all purpose fertilizer on a regular basis. Several here us 1/2 strength MiracleGro or similar. I wouldn't do any packing to insulate it as you suggest, as it needs to "breathe" and you don't want rot or fungus! My bulbs in the greenhouse never get cooler than 45F. The bulbs on the heated enclosed porch never go below 40F. The bulbs in the ground get covered with leaves and they do fine with the occasional freeze we get here. I am so glad you love the blooms! Makes it easy to understand why many of us are so passionate about our bulbs! (and we cringe when we hear some of the horror stories posted!) Kristi

Hi Guys,

Thanks for replying. Actually not even using it as a Spa. Its just a water body kind of thing for us. My bungalow is very small and hence we couldn't afford any more space for a pool even if we wanted to. So this pool (or water body as id like to call it) is only for visual appeal.

Its located outdoor and is open to the sky and direct sunlight on it for about 4 hours.

Secondly, im in India. Nobody here heats a pool at least as far as i know. We have only burning summers & other times summer. There is no actual winter in my country, at least in my state, as the temperature in winter is only as low as 23degree centigrade. That's our winter.

We have gone with a combo filter from EMAUX POOLS brand. It comes with a .2hp pump and a sand filter matched for it by the company itself. This is ideal since i intend to run the pump on solar power (owing to abundant summer sunlight more than id like to have) and the pump shouldn't have a huge start-up power draw. Usually motors take about 3-4 times their rated power when they start ? Hence this small pump was preffered and they said its about 8000 ltrs per hour capacity. My pool has 6000 ltrs in it.

I also heard the cartridge filters are very sticky and dont wash or hose out easily.

Apart from this the pool company only advised us to use chlorine granules and brush the pool daily (or even alternate days, since its very minimally used). The location of the home is in the city outskirts so not much of dust and no trees around. Its located in the middle of a 20 acre grass land.

What else will i need to do to maintain this pool on daily basis ?
