urea-free Bloom Booster fertilizer?

Recommendation is for 5-57-17 or 20-60-20 for short term use before Show, which must be referring to specific brands. Do you know what brands those are?

Found 12-55-6 Super Bloom on Amazon and Loew's which might do, but can't tell if it's urea-free.

I really do not recommend to use it at all. Balanced fertilizer over the whole year produces plenty of blooms - especially if you disbud for 3-4 months before the show. Problem is after the show - the plant can go into decline.

See if your County Master Gardeners offers a pruning class (likely start in jan-feb) When in doubt leave it alone. You don't cut branches flush but a bit higher above the branch collar which those publications you have should show you and you should be able to clearly see. Prune the easy stuff: Any suckers coming from the ground or at or below the graft point (if you can determine that in a mature tree). Any two feet from the ground is a safe bet anyway and who needs branches that low no matter what it is? Prune all waterspouts: branches growing upright off of other branches. Look for any diseased or damaged branches and remove them. Look for crossing branches. They can rub against each other causing mutual damage. Pick one and remove it. Do not pick short stuff, spindly stuff as it likely is fruiting wood and if it isn't leaving it won't hurt. Done.

This isn't to be rude...but more educational: It's funny how people not in the business don't realize the complexities of kitchen ordering....and the time required to write up a clean, perfect order. . Yes, some orders are easy and just require the basics. But today, most kitchens are more complex (or customized) and go floor to ceiling. Expectations are so much higher. Every little detail must be spelled out. Knowledge of how things fit and clearances all go hand in hand with a kitchen order. Also, the box construction and overlay will determine how you order the cabinets. My order of a frameless kitchen will be completely different from an inset kitchen. Many times people are shocked when I tell them in can take me anywhere from 1-3 days to get an order faxed in. Things you have to check: hinging, finished ends, corner clearances, appliances specs, hardware fit or interference, ceiling heights and crown molding design, unlevel floors and ceilings....I could go on and on. Some orders require me to hand-draw a custom cabinet for the factory. And once you get it faxed in....then you wait for the acknowledgement and you have to check it and double check it again! THEN it goes in to production. My clients think they'll get the cabinets 6 wks from when they hand me the deposit. It doesn't work that way. Figure in another week for ordering write up, factory time in processing the order and time for me to double check everything again. Have said all of that, I'm sure there are some freelance KD's out there that could help you out. Maybe Barkers has a list? Do you expect them to take on any fit responsibility to your house? If yes, I would pass. Like Greendesigns said....$300 isn't worth the liability.

OoC, on a show related note .... So at an AV show, do different people/groups/societies put up decorative displays? Or do vendors simple have a table(s) where upon they have their wares?

At orchid shows, such decorative displays are the norm and a display many incorporate a large number of orchids. No other blooming plants are allowed in a display.

Here is a schedule of the AVSA Convention.

The plants to be judged include African Violets, Saintpaulia species and other Gesneriads. Plants from other families can be used in design classes, dish gardens, terrariums to compliment AVs.

After the judging is done - the winners will be moved to the Honor Row. The commercial exhibitors have special classes - display tables - can be horticultural only or include a design. Can be AVs only - or they can include gesneriads.

I saw designers using cut flowers - baby breath for an example - in the arrangements - but the focal point of the design is an AV or AV blossoms.

Joanne - not this year. I am committed to a Gesneriad Convention - in Boston - this year - and 2 very expensive trips just do not fit in my budget. Next year AVSA Convention - will be Houston - and I have family there to stay.

Irina, The Gesneriad Convention in Boston sounds like fun and easier to get to. Also, lots of things to do in Boston in the summer. The Houston Convention should be grand with all the big names there! Joanne

Hear, hear - and fix a date when we will all get together.

Usually at the Conventions schedule is so busy - barely any time to investigate the city, Usually there are good tours set up for attendees.
