Can this Japanese Maple be saved?

Poor little “spring delight” overwintered outdoors in it’s container and may have received too much rain water. It’s still in the nursery pot, my intent is to repot it this year.

Afraid to make the situation worse, so haven’t pruned out the diseased areas. Thinking of using bonide copper fungicide based on my guess the problem is bacteria or a fungus. I only have buds and a lot of online pictures of diseases common in JM utilize photos of the leaves. So I’m hesitant and really hoping the tree will heal itself.

But I’m a realistic optimist, so would greatly appreciate suggestions on what can humanly be done to help it survive and thrive - ideally without drastically pruning it.
