saving broken japanese maple

Hi all. Just found these forums and looks like I'll be reading a lot.

First I found a broken limb off of a Japanese maple which I believe is Oshu Shidare.

This is off of a small tree abut 3 ft high that was newly planted last summer in a small park area in our little town.

I'd like to see if I can get anything to root or grow from this broken branch. It is a substantial branch and maybe decreased the tree size by one third.

Probably wrong time of year to try anything but any tips that might work would help.

I'm pretty sure it will be more than sticking it in dirt, water, and see if it grows.

I can take quite a few cuttings off smaller branches from the broken one.

Thank you for any ideas.
