Comments (40)Sochi, of course, you are right: everyone is different and their family situations and housing needs differ. That said, I am constantly amazed at the number of postings here asking for comment on floor plans which are often so similar to one another and often so very large. The similarity among many plans posted here tends to indicate that builders go to home shows and conventions where this year's "house of the year" is featured and bring some or all of those features to incorporate into their line-up. Doesn't matter too much if the builder is in North Carolina or California; climate, site conditions, local and regional conditions don't matter too much. Many of the houses look closely related, both in floor plan layout and in exterior appearance. When it comes to size, it takes builders about the same amount of time to build a 3,500-4,000 SF as it does a 2,500 SF house. The larger houses give such a greater return to the builder, so it's easy to see why there are so many large houses on the market and being built. When a prospective homeowner, particularly someone who may be building their first custom house, looks at plan after plan of this over inflated type and size it doesn't take long for a prospective homeowner to think they really need all those feature and all that size! If the family is only two people, perhaps with a small child, the large house is often justified as "my forever house", or "needed for resale in this neighborhood". No one seems to accept that real estate statistics suggest the average home owner sells their home every 5-8 years, and that it's not mandatory to move into a neighborhood of 5,000 SF, 6-bedroom houses! One has to be pretty creative (and persistant) to find and design a "smaller" house that really fits their needs and some of their critical wants! But, everyone is different, and as long as the budget permits, why not? Only some thoughts......See MoreCabinet Help - Mid range quality cabinet?
Comments (29)I just wanted to say that we recently installed Kabinart cabinets in our kitchen and we are very happy with them. When I originally looked for Kabinart reviews on here there weren't many and it made me a little nervous. We did a maple perimeter in starlight and a glazed cherry island. Interestingly enough cherry and maple were the same price, and they come standard all plywood, full extension and soft close drawers (I think a lot of the cabinet manufacturers are moving towards this). In contrast we ordered our master vanities from Kraftmaid and when they came in the drawer glides were all messed up, and they just didn't seem to have quite the same quality, although I'm sure if we had done our kitchen in Kraftmaid we would still be happy with it. We priced both lines and they were coming in pretty comparable. The only thing I didn't like with Kabinart were the cheap plastic shelf clips so I ordered metal ones, but other than that we have been very happy with the shipping/packing of them and with the quality of them during use (especially with 3 small children)....See MoreBuilt-in banquette vs. peninsula- Opinions needed
Comments (18)Just remember to make it big enough to accommodate older children & adults...they have longer legs and need their own, dedicated knee/leg space. Also, try to keep it so people don't have to do much sliding in/out as that can get old quickly. If it's just one seat on each side, it will probably be fine. I'm not a fan b/c I prefer to have some "control" over how far I am from the table when I sit and with a banquette, you're constrained by others sitting at the table since you cannot move your seat. But then, I'd probably sit at one of the outside seats and let others sit on the bench....See MoreAnything you would change in this kitchen design?
Comments (37)you have made some thoughtful adjustments to your kitchen layout based on the feedback you received. Adding an under counter beverage fridge and a drink station to the wall with the window on the left side seems like a practical and convenient addition to your kitchen. Similarly, creating a command center with a charging station for your devices on the cabinet side of the fridge wall can be a great way to keep your family organized. Regarding the size of your prep sink, 20 inches seems like a reasonable size product, but it ultimately depends on your personal preferences and how you plan to use the sink. If you frequently cook and prepare large meals, a larger sink may be more practical for you. On the other hand, if you have a smaller kitchen or don't do a lot of cooking, a 20-inch sink may be sufficient. Overall, it sounds like you have put a lot of thought into your kitchen design and have made some smart adjustments based on feedback. I hope your new kitchen layout turns out great!...See Morecali59
