What to do with coin silver spoons?
Comments (9)Coin silver spoons are among the oldest of silverware made for the common man. What is the maker's name on the back? That will allow you to trace where in the country they were made....and there were about 6 or 7 commom patterns or styles made of coin silver spoons. They polish up very well, and I think they are VERY attractive. My grandmother always had her "spooner" on the kitchen table where everyday family meals were served, filled with old coin silver spoons. If you needed to stir your coffee or eat your cereal, you grabbed a spoon....and when you did the dishes, you replaced the spoons in the spooner. Where did you get them? Are they old family pieces? They can easily date to the late 18th century. I have 4 spoons that were documented in my mother's family as dating back 5 generations from me, and I have others I have picked up at auctions. My favorite is a large tablespoon marked LaMer which research shows was made in New Orleans in the very early 19th century. Polish them.....use them....love them. Comments (9)With the naked eye the scratches can't be seen. The mark is smaller than the tip of a straightpin, but I have magnified it, enlarged it, many times to get it to the point that you see above. So although it looks real bad, in reality it isn't. At first I couldn't find any mark, other than the Minerva head but somebody told me to look for a dot somewhere on the spoon, as the French are notorious for 'hiding' their marks. Lo and behold after much magnfying I found this. I just haven't quite figured out what exactly the picture is! The letters look like L & G with something in between them, so could be a maker mark, or a place mark....See MoreHelp identifying this silverplate mark, please
Comments (5)I believe it's a souvenir-type spoon. Probably from somewhere she has visited, or that commemorates some event. I don't think they have a name or pattern....See MoreAnnie's Pear and Maple Cobbler and Ice Cream Spoons
Comments (4)claire, i'm so glad you liked that recipe, it's one of my absolute favorites. I love pear and I love maple, so it's a natural for me, I think ice cream could only make it better. The spoons have me kind of intrigued, I've never seen a special ice cream spoon. OK, post pictures! Annie...See Moresheilajoyce_gw
