Alchymist Rose Seeking Clematis Companion(s)
Comments (3)I like peach paired with white. Just put the potted 'Rouge Cardinal' with one open bloom by 'Secret' rose (white edged pink) and it's terrible! The dark colored clematis overwhelms the rose....See MoreCompanion Shrubs for Shady Perennial Garden
Comments (2)I have the black walnut problem too. I've recently planted two Euonymous, one species for the height, and one smaller one. Not my shrubs of choice, but they will take shade and will grow under the walnuts. A really nice shrub to try is alpine currants. They can take sun or shade and get about 6 feet tall if left un-trimmed. I read somewhere that they have a nice natural shape. Of course, neither are evergreen....See MoreCompanion Perennial for Purple Stella D'Oro Daylily
Comments (4)This is a south-facing exposure that gets shade after 2:00pm and is enough of a winter micro-climate to keep some perennials going all year. I have sun-tolerant heuchera (caramel/amber) in with my yellow daylilies. When nothing is in bloom, the heuchera foliage provides nice color and it's evergreen here in NC. In front of the heuchera, I also have scabiosa (blue) and in front of that, I have threadleaf coreopsis. Right now, my scabiosa is blooming and the heuchera is just gorgeous. I also have some of the short coneflowers mixed in randomly with the daylilies. Off to one side, there is a large patch of dianthus mountain mist, Spanish lavender and purple heuchera and a few more yellow daylilies. On the other side is a weeping cherry. Behind this little patch are abelia that bloom white for a very long time. My landscaper put those shrubs in and I can tell they will be too large, so I'll have to relocate those and give the daylilies a new backdrop, probably tall phlox in lavender....See MoreCompanion perennial for hibi garden
Comments (1)I have hardy banana (musa basjoo) (9') in the back of my bed around the pond, with the hardy hibiscus in front of it (5'). You could also use cannas if you wanted something shorter, but still tropical looking. Although like me in zone 5, you'd have to dig them, and the banana, well you only have to mulch it heavily to make it come back in zone 5. Some of the taller coreopsis would look good and fill in and bloom while your hibiscus is growing. I also have a nice perennial, red dragon persicara which is a good filler, not invasive. Or reseeding annual purple perilla, which gets to be around 2 1/2 feet tall in ideal conditions, and drops seed and returns each year....See Morefig_insanity Z7b E TN
