It's one of the Jatropha species, they're not natives. Some are kept as garden plants but some species are major weeds. The seed capsules 'explode' scattering the seeds far and wide.

The worst one here is called Belly-ache Bush, Jatropha gossypiifolia, and it looks very much like yours. It's a toxic plant and causes a lot of problems in cattle country.

Depends on where you are. Cultivating it in some parts of the country the local authorities would have you crucified in the centre of town as a warning to others. And in some other places they wouldn't take any notice. "Pretty" is a term I wouldn't use, I spent a number of years trying to eradicate it. I guess to me it will always look like a noxious weed.

Yeah okay, wow. Any idea on what kind of reception it receives in the Pilbara region? I couldn’t see any new plants coming up but it’s definitely sprayed a few seeds around. Wasn’t planted by us or looked after in any way yet still seems to be flourishing so it obviously doesn’t need much to take off, would hate to be harbouring a pest that could cause any kind of harm

The biggest problem with it is in Queensland but it's also in the NT and the Kimberley, with some in the Pilbara. You're better off reporting it to the local council. They can work out how it came to be on your place/where it came from. It could be from an infestation that isn't known about. If they can locate that then they can set up an eradication program before it spreads too far. Don't cut up your plant and dump it anywhere. The pieces will root and start new plants. It doesn't dry out very well and won't burn properly. Scorched stems can re-shoot. We were trying to control it along a river. Wet season access was impossible, and dry season there were issues with crocs. The work itself was very labour intensive. So overall, it wasn't the most favourite part of my job.
