We would like to put glass lift and slide doors (or some other sliding door with a minimal threshold) into our apartment in NYC in order to allow us to have separate office spaces which are still somewhat sound resistant but still let light through. Someone on another one of these posts recommended lift and slide doors, which I had not heard of, but which sounds like this is exactly what would work for us. I was hoping there might be a few people here with expertise in this area that could offer some advice. Here are our questions: 1) Can we even use lift-and-slide doors in our floor situation? This is a high-rise condo bldg with concrete subfloors (and the bldg won't give us permission to do any drilling into the concrete subfloor). We will be putting in new bamboo floating floors which are 9/16" thick on top of FloorMuffler underlayment - is this enough room for the tracks in the lift and slide doors systems to be laid into the floor so that they are still recessed as they are supposed to be? (I've tried to look at the specs on the various websites, but wasn't clear about how much space you needed in the floor to install the recessed tracks.) 2) Any particular recommendations on brand? These will be all interior, so weatherproofing features are just a waste of money in our case, but we do want something that slides easily and which is a sound resistant as possible, and which is hopefully reliable and durable. We'd also prefer less framing and more glass, to let more light and views through. The brands I've found so far are: Marvin, Panda, Kolbe, Weiland, Nanawall, and Weathershield. Anyone have any particular recommendations about one brand being better than another (in particular for our described usage)? Thanks in advance for any advice!

thanks! both face west, and the mud room is tiny--8x12--and overflowing at this time of year. the kitchen is between the mud room and great room, which i despise, as it funnels every visitor through the kitchen into the house, and then creates a huge bottleneck since no one ever wants to leave the kitchen! every, and i mean every, gathering we have consists of people crammed into the aisle of the ktichen and not one person in the great room. not one! grr... the kitchen is kept warm with the vintage vulcan range which has approx one thousand pilot lights going, so none of the cold air reaches the great room. where the slider is should be the formal entry,it is larger and more centrally located, and we could then appropriate the mud room space for the kitchen which would also make sense.no traffic through but more counter and storage would be nice. my dh is aghast at the thought of replacing the slider with a wall and standard entry door, however, so i am thinking of just using the slider anyway on occasion. especially tuesday, as a realtor is coming to give me an idea of fair market value, and i want to show off the house as best i can, which i think means using that door even if just for that visit. because the entry is the first impression and the last, i hope entering the house this way will make a better impression.

Still evaluating option there will be a double sliding door (2,60 height) between one sleeping room and the living. don't know if the other doors should have two bosses in the doors and/without additionally kind of greek frame on the top. Or much simpler sleek look meaning all flat.

No answers, but I will say that I have a spreadsheet of over 20 T&T providers that I've been working my way through for the last couple of months. It's daunting indeed. I've seen a sample of Zola and a full Unilux set in a showroom -- both look solid. Getting a sample Kommerling shipped to me next week. My partner's house in Germany has Schuco -- waiting still for a quote from them. I've also gotten pricing on Broga, Vetrina, Seemray, and Bieber (so far the most expensive (2x the next runner up)). but haven't seen any of these in person. Still waiting for quotes from GLA, Mavrik, Zola, Alpen, and Neuffer. Innotech, Denco, and Glo all don't ship to California, so I don't know about them. Cascadia will only do huge orders. I've heard of Rehau, Eurotech, Inline, Reynears, Euroline, and Intus but haven't enquired about them. Too bad you're not on the East Coast, I've heard great things about European Architectural Supply out of Boston as a resource. If anyone is reading this and is in the SF Bay Area, I highly recommend Mark over at Heartwood Windows and Doors; he's the one who showed us the Unilux and he had infinite patience. Was not impressed with Pella's or Kolbe's tilt and turns. If you ever pick something, let me know.
