WINDOWS: roman blinds in one room and curtains in an adjacent room?

Is it acceptable to mix up using curtains in one room and blinds in another? The rooms are adjacent. We have navy blue curtains in the living room and now we need window coverings for our kitchen and dining room. The kitchen is white and the dining room has a bold black & white flock wallpaper. We don't have a rug for the dining room either - not sure if that should come first or after the fact. We are looking for a square rug 8' x 8' and it's not easy to find!

The living room is fairly neutral, but dark blue accent chairs and drapers. The living room window is opposite the dining room window at the other end of the (small) house.

Any suggestions?

Yes you can do a roman shade on the kitchen window, if possible hang it above the window so the least amount of glass is covered when it is up. You could do panels or roman shed in DR

Use a fabric for the shades that has a blue like the drapes

Our house is now 29 years old. We have had Pella windows since then....metal outside but wood on the inside. There are 21 double hungs. All of my window treatments are attached to the wooden window trim. I have never lived anywhere that it was done differently. We have cellular shades in the bathrooms. They are up all day and are pulled down at night. When they are up they are covered by the curtains. I have no other shades. We recently purchased a second home. There was a 2 inch brown wooden blind at the large master bedroom window. I could not get it down fast enough!! I abhor those blinds!! Since we needed privacy at night, I got a decorative rod and grommet topped blackout panels. They are so simple to open and close...they work/look great!

To answer your question regarding mixing window treatments..Yes, absolutely you can mix curtain styles and unify the look with using same fabric or shape. Is this your home? I might suggest painting the window molding white to not attract so much attention to all the windows. I think an attractive solution to the quarter round windows is to mount an upholstered valance/lambrequin on the top portion of window giving the window shape a overall rectangle appearance. It is a DIY project that is relatively simple. You could choose a bold stripe or print and drapery panels in a coordinating solid for your other windows. I like the color of the ones pictured. I think your drapery rod height is fine. It is really a cute place. Good luck.

Thanks to all of you. I so appreciate your comments. decoenthusiaste, I especially appreciate the additional pictures. I looked and looked and was only able to find one of these. The extra visual is very helpful...especially like the Enviable Designs representation. JudyG Designs, your idea is nice around the loveseat, but for me, it's more formal and a lot, a lot of fabric. With full drapes on both sides of the small windows, I was going to end up with an entire wall of fabric. (There is only 18 inches between the window and the wall on either side.) I also still have a headboard, bed skirt, euro shams, bench and wall art to add to the room. So, I think, in the end, the room will look a little less plain than it does at the moment.

Black out shades or blinds. Without seeing the actual window openings it is hard to determine whether they should be outside or inside mounted. You can use fabric roman shades for some softness too.

Thank you jck910 and Patricia Colwell Consulting. A couple of follow up questions:

1) what do you think of this fabric for the kitchen roman shades? it's the same blue as the living room drapes. And a hint of grey.

2) This is what the window frame looks like above the sink, underneath/behind the cabinetry "valence". Do you suggest getting shades that cover the entire window AND trim? If so, do you mount it on the ceiling or on the wall? Originally, I was thinking to get the shades to fit INSIDE the window trim. But now when I look it it, if I do it this way (fit inside the frame), then there might be a small sliver of window trim showing under the cabinetry valence (because the valence isn't long enough to cover the top of the window trim).

Mine doesn't have a valance piece and I have more wall above the window. If I were you I might think about taking that valance piece off.
