Room darkening blinds - vinyl windows

We are in need of new windows and have been researching companies. Windows are double-hung. While I would love to have wood windows again, DH wants totally maintenance free, so I think we are headed in the vinyl direction.
Currently, the master bedroom has roman shades where the header is screwed into the top of the window and a panel on each side. I have another bedroom and a bathroom where I need the room-darkening for night.
So out of 18 windows, I have 5 to deal with.
Can I screw into the vinyl?
What other options do I have? I have been looking and looking online and see inside mounts and outside mounts - I don't know that I want something mounted to the top of the woodwork casing.
So far we have met with one window company - I would rather have had my teeth drilled! Super high-pressure. We are meeting with two more today. I hope they are different. I am unsure of asking these salesmen as I am afraid they are just going to tell me what I want to hear!
Thank you for any ideas.
