It is a bit late to be searching for bare root fruit trees in So. Calif. I recently bought a bare root dwarf nectarine from Green Thumb Nursery in San Marcos. Not sure where else they have locations. Although it may be a hassle - it is better to buy a potted tree locally then mail away for a tree. Local nurseries really need your business.

I have been re-planting my orchard, pulling out old trees and planting new ones. I recently removed a pear that was about 8 feet away from a 4' tall fig tree I had planted two years ago. There were multiple, large fig roots mixed in with those of the pear. It is clear to me that this small fig still had highly invasive roots, so be careful.

Hello, I'm not sure what variety you have. The one that I know is dwarf is basically a small shrub and would never be prunable to a tree form. I have the most common variety called "wonderful". I let it grow as a bush for two years and then I started pruning it to tree form in the winter. It still tries to turn back to a bush and I have to keep after it but it is a pretty thing and one of the few fruiting trees I've tried that actually loves it here in Las Vegas. I would wait until winter if I where you because then you can see the form better and then I would prune out a nice multi-trunk shape out of it. Happy Gardening, Maria

Thanks for all your replies. Lots of useful info. Yes, the tree gets plenty of full sun. It is against a south-facing wall. I have no idea how old the tree is. The house is only 6 years old. No idea when the previous owners planted the pom. But it is fairly well grown....... at least 8' tall and 5' wide. I have plenty of leaves as of now but no signs of any flowers at all. No, I have not fertilized it since moving in. What do I need to do right now to encourage flowering? Should I fertilize? If so, what kind? How often? Any more tips on getting it to flower will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
