How wide is the new opening? Where is the TV now? In the armoire? Please post a picture of the kitchen?

The opening is 4 feet, yes, television is currently in armoire. Here is kitchen plan...

The armoire does not need to stay, and the sofas are very comfortable, but the fabric is horrible...shows everything...we are open to replace them.

Call me crazy, but I would FIRST decide where the TV, and sofa set up to watch the TV in this all purpose room is going to go first before i decide what walls to rip out.....and if I were ripping out a wall it would be the entire wall between kitchen and the family room......with two doors you now have a walk thru family room that disrupts everyone while watching TV....this seems like a room that needs form following function....just sayin'.

Susan, I would have loved to, but there are stairs in the center of the house...it's a center hall colonial...this portion is the only section we can remove. Not ideal, but we are working with what we've got ;)

My husband and I are younger empty nesters.

I've come up with several plans already...As I mentioned before, the upper left doorway leads to a foyer, the upper right doorway will lead to the renovated kitchen...we cannot take down the whole wall because there are stairs on the opposite side. There is a powder room on the opposite side of the right wall.

Plan #1 - moving armoire, two club chairs with love seat...I like this, but the sofa and club chair are tight

Thanks wickedwhite, I like the idea, my concern is, we don't have another family room, so when our extended family comes over, seating areas will be difficult. At Christmas we have 16-18 people over.

Christine Whitehead, your second layout Plan #2 is the best one. You just need to bring in the chairs more

Grover's plan gives you the best design as well as the most seating Christine. Two long couches is easy room for 6 vs the loveseat and two chair arrangement seating for 4 in your option 2. I would definitely add the window to left side of FP for better symmetry, balance the extra door creation and give your room more light.

Here is an adaptation of what Grover suggested w/additions for table/lamps/additional seating. I would arrange three ottoman cocktail tables that could function both as table/foot rest and extra seating when needed. TV opposite FP, wall mounted w/media storage below. New furniture w/the effort of your remodel will help you create a great long term space to enjoy in your empty nest and family times together.

I love plans #4 and #2 in that order. You need a dedicated space for the TV and the cabinets provide lots of storage. The only concern is whether one couch and 2 chairs offers enough seating. Could you push out the sofa and add a sofa table behind with 2 small seating cubes that fit underneath?
