Money's no object - how would you decorate this room?
Comments (31)Ok that's easy enough. I thought we had a bit more room on that facing wall but I can work with that. I don't like a tv jack that requires submission in decor. Since money isn't an object, (and frankly it's not expensive to do) how about we string cable under the carpet to a different location? Are you totally opposed to that? If you don't do that, you are going to be greeting your guests as they walk into the house with the backs of your furniture, which is both unapealing and heck I think it's also not fungi swayed either (I don't do fung but they do have some good principals). There's also wireless cable...do you have that in your area? I know it's realistic to have TV in your home, so I'm not trying to take that out of the room, but I also think you need to consider that this is the room your guests see first. It sets a tone for the house and should be a primary focus for you, given that you don't have a large entry hall (most homes don't now a days). I didn't draw it in here, but one thing I think is a must is that you should have a small table (round) on the entry landing in front of that long window. Or a globe on a stand, something to break the space from living room and entry mentally and physically. You'll be excited to know that you are now going to become a world class globe collector. I've decided that you either travel, or have always wanted to travel and thus...globes are your passion :) You don't have millions, but you do have some wonderful ones scattered throughout the room you exotic little fool you! Your new style is classy and traditional...if you should choose to accept my design :oP But also incorporates influences from around the world :)...See MoreHow to decorate a dining room when you don't want a dining room
Comments (19)I love having a dedicated INformal dining room! Yes, it's 'The Dining Room,' but it's not formal. Long farm table, comfortable chairs, warm lighting, flooring and surfaces that won't get damaged by kids or spills. A really warm and welcoming place to eat meals as a family or with friends. The 'breakfast nook' has just never been my favorite. Even when the space is nice, the furniture is rarely of a caliber that brings joy to the users... I'd replace that with two comfortable wingback chairs and a tall side table -- the kind of place you could have a cup of coffee and read the paper, or sit with a glass of wine while your spouse makes dinner or cleans the kitchen. The other great use for a 'breakfast nook' IMO is as a kids' homework area or auxiliary baking table. Another great use for an unused dining room is (if you can close it off) as a TV room. Get the TV out of your family room and reclaim that space as a family gathering area without the constant racket of a TV....See MoreUnique Dining Room: How to Finish out lighting/wall decor/color
Comments (45)Ah, gotcha. I misunderstood. I still do like those rooms and would consider them inspirational, at least partly. I am working around a few constraints for the room so maybe that accounts for the differences? - I need to find a chandelier that has a single round canopy, due to the way our ceiling is. In searching for a chandelier, it's been hard to find something that I think works with the room and has a single round canopy. - I really like the paned mirror in the first inspo room, but I'm looking to put one of those in the foyer. - I would like to find an affordable table that looks like the first inspo pic. I'm searching a local store's inventory for the table and chairs to find something we could potentially really get (and afford) instead of incorporating a picture of the *perfect* table that I don't know the make/price of. - I would also like to use parsons chairs for all of the seats, but I already have two and doubt I'd be able to match them easily to another 6. I think a contrasting chair type would be a better fit because of that. In the second insp pic I like how the room is generally neutral but has subtle color to it. I like the lantern light fixtures in that room but realize they won't work for my space. I also like the artwork in the room and I could use something like in my room in place of the circular mirrors. For my room, I knew I wanted to find a rug with a neutral base that had a few bits of accent color. The accent colors in the rug shown in the mock-up might be more vivid than I pictured in my mind, but I think they work. I also like the idea of an oriental rug that's not so traditional. I hope that helps explain?!? Maybe those rooms aren't exact inspirations. I'm still on the lookout for room designs to help guide me. My unusual dining room doesn't make it easy to compare online dining rooms to my own....See MoreHow would you decorate this room? Wall colour and furniture?
