Size of tile in small bathrooms, rule of thumb?

Is there a rule of thumb about which size tile looks better in small bathrooms? We are replacing floor tile and tub/shower surround in 3 small bathrooms. Two of the bathrooms are typical 5 x 8 size with tub/shower combo. One of them is tinier bc the vanity is on the outside; it only includes the toilet and tub/shower combo so not much actual floor space for the tile.

So for the floor tile, which looks better, a larger format tile or smaller? Or does it matter?

Doesn't matter and very taste dependent. On a bathroom floor, I wouldn't want all the grout that goes with a small mosaic type tile. I just used a 12x24 porcelain floor tile in a small bathroom. For both, the key element is having a competent installer.

We used large format tile in our tiny Master Bath with tight grout joints.

Also, the height may cause more splashing especially if your intending to have undermounted sinks. I've seen most faucet designs offered in a variety of styles & heights, i.e. 4 inch, single lever. If a vessel sink isn't in your plan, you may want to see if the same design is offered in the shorter height.

I think the ottoman is a good size. Our couch is 84" wide and our ottoman is 40" square. I wouldnt go any wider than 44" though.

The bottom of a chandelier should be about 30 inches above the tabletop, which is to say about five feet (60 inches) above the floor since a tabletop is about 30 inches. With a standard 8-foot ceiling, I think that one of those double-tiered chandeliers will seem to crowd the ceiling. I don't think I've ever seen a crystal chandelier that provided a good downlight. The best of them give adequate light for eating but wouldn't seem like a good choice for sewing or crafts; others seem to illuminate only themselves. Here are a few examples of some kinds of pendant lights that do provide good light. I can vouch for the third because it's the one that I have. These are all from Lamps Plus.

The size of the molding is also contingent on the house style, room size and it's age. I have a 1949 colonial with 8 " base molding with a shoe molding at the bottom. Ceiling only has a picture hanging molding(1 1/2"), no crown. New kitchen addition will have a 4 5/8" maple crown with a rope insert. You want the crown molding to be proportional to the room. Ron

I've used large tile (12x12 and 16x16) in smaller bathrooms with similar color grout to help the space look / feel larger. I think if I'd used contrasting grout with the large tile, the bathroom would have looked smaller because then the room is chopped up visually with grout lines.

Yet I also think very small patterns (basketweave, small hex, penny round, pinwheel, etc) work really well in small bathrooms. The small scale pattern looks more like a texture and your eye can't really count the grout lines like you could on a large format contrasting grout tile job.
