Staircase stuck in the 80s

I need help with ideas to make this staircase really stand out. we will keep the handrail. thx

6 years agoIt is not stuck in the 80's as spindles similar to yours have been used in houses over a hundred years old up to the present. Since much of the trim is painted white, you can paint the spindles if you want.

6 years agoPaint can transform them... Or you can change the spindles to be iron... A few more ideas...

What can I do to modernize this 80s staircase?
Comments (21)What stands out to me more is the tiling and carpet on the stairs. It would be interesting to have some notes on what styles you like because it would be easier to attach photos that would be going in that direction. If you like traditional, Spanish or ultra modern. I like the wood on the railing. Wood on the treads would be nice. I personally like modern design and I'd change the stairs and make them floating stairs. I'd eliminate that wall in between on the upper part of the staircase and continue the glass rail. Comments (24)I am a HUGE fan of Timberlane shutters in PA. The quality of these shutters is extraordinary. I have had them on my house now for 16 years - had them painted by my local painter, still look great. My DD got them about 3 years ago and they now offered the color she wanted in a factory paint job. The rep told me that these same shutters had been on the outside of their building in PA (harsh winters there!) now for 19 years and still looked great. One of the things they offer is copper guards that slip right on top of the shutter. Shutters tend to rot from water getting into the seams where the shutter dowels are held. This prevents that from happening. I think this is part of their success. Comments (8)Stairs should be within code if no more than 4 Inch apart The pine step could be stained to match railing or stained then paint railing. My husband grew up with stairs open and very steep and they all survived. They only had a a hand rail very rustic My father in law had RA severe deforming joints and used the stairs for 30 years. So check space between steps cause there are codes now and insurance issues if your renters get hurt. Comments (12)I don't see a lot of texture on your walls in the photos. My first thought was if you went with a grasscloth wallpaper you may not have to sand. You can get patterned grass cloths as well Are you planning on keeping all electrical in place or have you considered moving to accommodate two sconces? Above is before & after of a project. You can paint like this or you can leave treads stained. You don't need the carpet. The rails and newel are black. This is a professional paint job. Match white paint to your existing white trim.

Your staircase is lovely with a very graceful curve.
Can't you just see your child coming down the stairs in prom attire?
If you don't like it all wood, you could use the same creamy-colored paint that you used on the stringer to paint the risers, the balusters, possibly the newel and newel cap as illustrated in the photos shown above.
Replacing the balusters with wrought iron really changes the character and the cut-outs in the wrought iron need to be dusted which would bother me no end.

6 years agoThis is what I did, it involved hiring a company to strip and stain the bannister, but there is an article on Pin interest on how to do it as a DYI project. Mine looked like yours before. There are other ideas out there including replacing the spindles with aluminum. They sell them on Ebay if you want to go really modern.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoMy husband and I are in the middle of a DIY remodeling job. I still have to paint and put up moulding in the stairwell. I just finished the staircase this last weekend. The stair treads were stripped, stained, and coated with polyurethane. The risers and spindles were painted with semi gloss paint, and the newel posts and banister were gel stained and wiped with polyurethane. It was a huge job, but saved us $$$ doing it ourselves.
