Replacing Andersen Hardware

I have purchased a home with many Andersen Windows and Doors. They all have bright brass hardware, which I'm trying to get rid of. The replacement hardware is very expensive, and I'm wondering if there are any other brands of hardware that can be used? We have to change our front door lock (it's brass AND broken) - and it appears to be almost $400 to replace hardware. Thanks!

Nope. The hardware is made especially for them and I know of nothing that will replace it by another manufacturer.

I spray painted my old Andersen hardware and it hasn't chipped, looks fine after 5 years... OTOH I sprang for upgraded window cranks on new Andersen windows and regret it. They are bulkier and interfere with the shades AND screens. By the way, I also regret getting the more expensive, finer mesh screens that are supposedly visually less obtrusive. They quickly collect fine dust that can't be removed without removing the screen and scrubbing in a tub. Stick with the traditional screens!

I've been doing some window hunting as well. It sure can be confusing! You should use the search in this forum cause I've learned quite a bit. I think your choice really depends on how much you want to spend. I found Andersen Fibrex at the top of the price range. I'm opting for fiberglass, just to confuse you further!(Marvin Integrity, Pella Impervia to name a few) I've read that vinyl can change due to weather extremes and what happens is that the frame changes (expands or contracts) due to temp extremes, but the glass doesn't and so there are problems with the seals breaking away from the glass itself. I don't think there is a dramatic warp of the window itself. If you live in a moderate temperature zone, it shouldn't be a huge problem, but if you are in an extreme zone, you should consider other options. Also, if vinyl is your choice, an insulated frame is a good idea. Go for quality and a top notch installer. I'm no expert, but there are a few that post on here. Take some time to look through this forum, you'll be glad you did!

Couple questions / comment: - Between Lincoln and SP, how would you rank these? - Any suggestions of all aluminum (needs to be thermally broken)? - Any suggestions for steel replica aluminum? - I’m seeing Renewal in a couple days. Good to know. In response to your comment re our goal of steel aesthetic, that’s just the inspiration. I’ve seen & felt Lincoln and SP and do like the aesthetic. So it’s really more a question of performance and warranty reliability for those two. I wouldn't read toooo much into the pricing games, there is a fine line between trying to make the phone ring with attractive promotions and going overboard with it. The day that people stop calling for the BOGO special or 40% off is the day that companies will stop running them. Personally I prefer a more modest and transparent discount structure, but it is what it is. At the end of the day, the vast majority of companies in this industry never sell at retail. That number has questionable value as such, so I'd focus on whether or not the proposed price is of value to you. Regarding product, you have a wide variety of option that you mentioned, you might consider narrowing them down by your project goals. The Marvin and RBA options are pretty and well made, but not killer performers. The Okna is on another planet in terms of thermal and structural performance if that is more important to you, but a vinyl window won't look as rich as wood (if you are considering wood). Okna's Starmark composite is the best of both worlds if you have that available to you.

There are companies that make hardware that will work with Andersen, but it's usually very custom hardware(wrought iron, etc...) that is even MORE expensive.

We're facing the same situation and you're SO right - the Andersen replacement hardware is *crazy* expensive. I'm sanding our door hardware down today and going to give spray painting a go!

I am looking to replace my hardware on an Andersen full-screen storm door -- brass that is badly pitted, so I don't think a paint job would work.

Has anyone had any luck replacing storm door hardware? or painting it? It is our front door's storm door, so I am wondering if a paint job on the storm door handle would wear off with use. I guess it might be worth a try?
