Reliable places to buy a hosta 2017.
Comments (11)Crownsville Nursery, formerly Bridgewood Gardens. I have bought plants during their Ugly Plant sale each of the last two summers. Nothing ugly about the plants. Their prices are good year round, but are excellent during the sale. Unlike many of the other vendors, Crownsville/Bridgewood plants come in small plastic pots. As a relative newbie to hostas, and ordering in the dead of summer, I felt a little more comfortable buying plants in pots rather than bare root. They do an incredible job of packing, so the plants arrived in flawless condition. When you take their plants out the pots, most are fairly root bound. So, I carefully removed the soil with a water hose and untangled the roots before planting. Most of them had excellent root systems, similar to the pictures I have seen from other major vendors. A couple of plants had smaller, but still more than adequate, roots. I strongly recommend Crownsville/Bridgewood. But, this year I'm going to try bare root plants from Green Mountain and/or Hallson because they have the ones I'm looking for....See MoreHosta B 2017
Comments (33)Barb, my Brim Cup will eventually get tattered. I had one before I got this one, and after a few years just threw it out! It seemed that each year it got worse. I would suggest you divide yours and plant half back in the garden and the other half in a pot. Dave, your Breeder's Love is beautiful! Perhaps you would consider providing a photo of it for the Hosta Library?...See MoreHosta T 2017
Comments (42)Steve - interesting! I looked up Golden Meadows and Temptation in the Hosta Library Comparison feature... they do look a lot alike, but it seems like GM has more ruffly-edged leaves. Could be just the individual plants that are there.... ? Anyway, both are beautiful, and your specimen of Temptation is really beautiful. Very tempting, I'd say!...See MoreHosta X 2017
Comments (46)Thank you for the EE winter storing tips, newhostalady! I have definitely not enough garden for all the plants I want to have. But hellebores are so nice. My old hostafriend has some really big ones and they are in full bloom now, unbelievable in this cold! But this is exactly what makes them interesting. Flowers in the snow...They get as big as hostas with the years just in another time of the year, so that's perfect. I have already been promised some seedlings in summer :-) What are you doing with all those beats kathy? Are they distributed through Mardi Gras? When it is carnival here in Germany you can collect tons of sweets......See More- 6 years ago
