Need help with wood species for interior doors
Comments (3)This is all poplar: custom doors by Maiman in order to get a really wide center rail, and paneling by my carpenter to match. It took paint extremely well, the finish was almost flawless This was 170 year old house, hence the obvious sag to the floor....See Morewood species for trim/doors
Comments (5)Thanks for the comments. Yes we are looking for stained trim, wood windows are pine and will be stained also. Started with poplar but worry about poplar for stain grade. Meant we can't get birch trim/doors, not sure we can get maple either. Being pushed to knotty alder for upgrade? We love alder but worried knotty will be too much, and clear is too pricy. It is a rustic/lodge style ranch home, however we are trying to keep the rustic finishes in balance so that it's tasteful but doesn't feel like a cabin. So while knotty alder probably would fit in, we worry the knotty may be too much, especially with the floors?...See MoreBest wood species for exterior door?
Comments (3)If you're set on wood and want minimal maintenance, I'm of the same mind...teak or ipe...and simply let it gray. With a dense wood like that, you'd want large hinges, I'd recommend going with a ball-bearing hinge, I'd recommend four hinges. At least one long screw per hinge leaf. A strong door can still fail with a weak jamb. With the jamb, use long screws to properly catch the framing studs. If the door stop trim is not integral with the jamb, the screws can be hidden behind the applied stop. Make the door stop molding a little larger than typical, if not integral to the jamb, ensure that it is well-fastened to the jamb. Even though wood like teak and ipe can survive with no finish, I do recommend a finish on the door for best longevity. Take a look at Cetol Door and Window. It's a high UV finish, and to renew, it does not have to be taken down to bare wood like many finishes. Clean, a light scuff sand or scuff it with a scotch bright pad, then recoat. It's what I used on my own mahogany front entry door (sheltered) and mahogany balcony hand rails (full sun). It's been five or six years since I built the door and balcony, this year will be the first time I renew the Cetol on the mahogany. Cypress is another wood species to consider, though it would need some sort of finish for UV protection....See MoreCabinetry wood PROS What wood species is this shelf above the range?
Comments (9)Could be a cherry. that's possible. The graining is rather pronounced though. And they could have done a slightly reddish stain on american walnut. I did my own Walnut wood top and it looks like this the corbels look like quarter sawn cut. It could also be a mahogany. So, HU, it's one of those 3 wood types!...See MoreAP
