Prestige Hood seems too loud. Advice needed.

Comments (15)I would love to get rid of the cans PO put in the kitchen. There are six of them, and even with 50 watt flood bulbs they do a poor job of lighting the kitchen. The 120 V under-cabinet puck lights have all also failed one by one. When I went o replace one group I found zip cord in the walls with wire nuts. Looks like the fool did not have clue. They also glued together every slip joint under a bathroom lav, failed to even set the pedestal for the bathroom lav vertical (and then tiled it into the floor), and left 24 inches of granite counter supported only be the cabinet beside the DW. I have a steel frame made to support the granite, and magnets to hold the end panel onto the frame. And the PO was a patent attorney....See MoreBacksplash too loud?? Need advice!
Comments (28)Thank you all so much!!! This has helped so much, both to realize that this really isn't the end of the world, and to help crystallize why it wasn't working for me. The vintage feel with the original top cabinets, exposed brick and wood island and marble countertops is what I'm going for and it just doesn't mesh style-wise. We will live with it for a while, out of necessity. But I'm thinking of getting a subtle carrara marble subway tile, with a light grout! Just FYI- the brick is the chimney (oil burner) which we exposed. It juts out and we can't put cabinets there. So in person it makes sense that there is one column. Plus I love it, and it's a piece of the 1920's house. The vintage schoolhouse shades are from an amazing salvage store in Toronto, called the Door Store (if anyone here is from Toronto.) We live in NYC now, but I grew up there and we brought the shades back on the plane. (My parents used to shop there with me in tow, 30 years ago!) As to the tile, it's hand made in Spain and I think the finish just wasn't right on this batch. What looks like a black line is actually the finish not extending all the way to the ends, so you see the masonry. The sample batch I bought was a very light blue, the lightest that you see in the tile now, with just a teeny unfinished edge. This batch has really large unfinished sections on one side. It really probably was a flaw, and we shouldn't have rushed to put it up just because our guy was coming the next day. Lesson learned!! I've included some more photos, including two befores- one from us and one from the listing. Top cabinets are the originals, just painted. Part of the last minute adjustment in this kitchen was also because the marble guy had told us the original cabinets wouldn't support the marble. Knowing we couldn't get a base cabinet to match the uppers, we went to Ikea and did a two tone look. But that did throw off our plans for a blue-and-white kitchen. I actually did adjust the tile a little, but didn't realize how dark they were going to be. And it was all a crazy rush, because we already didn't have a kitchen sink for 3 weeks when we realized we had to replace the cabinets. To be sanguine, things would be a LOT more serious if there was a problem with the stone, or the cabinets they rest on. Thanks again!! Comments (18)If I were doing a kitchen from scratch, I would absolutely do something very similar to what you did @opaone (and billy_g from another thread). Unfortunately, my cabinets and backsplash are designed to have an 18" high wall mount hood that starts about 32" above the range surface. To go deep commercial hood, I think I'd need to remove the cabinet above it, and cut the crown moulding right above them, not sure how involved that would be. Our ducting situation is a 10" round right above the hood that just goes immediately straight out the side (ie the run length is just the thickness of the outer wall) so there's nowhere to include a silencer and the external blower would be so close I'm not sure there would be much noise reduction. And the backsplash tiling would need to be redone, because it only goes up to the height of the current hood. Also, wiring for a remote switch. In other words it would be a pretty big project for one appliance, unless I'm overthinking it somehow or missing some easier way. Honestly even the 30" Prestige is probably deep enough that in our configuration it would cause issues for anyone taller than 5'9 or so (fine for us, perhaps not fine for some relatives who might occasionally cook here)....See Moreneed help deciding on prestige 26 or 42 hood

A couple things stuck from other threads I read on Houzz (gardenweb in the day) and have proven invaluable advice in my kitchen rennovation: the hood should be larger than the range and the hood is as important as the range. Do not underestimate the value of ventilation in a kitchen. A 36" range should have a 42" hood....See Morecheri127
